Find Ancestors

Hi,

I'm trying to find parents for Richard GEEN (born c1851 in Barnstaple Devon - Bishop's Tawton) & William TAYLOR (born c1838 also in Barnstaple -Bishop's Tawton).

William died 10/04/1883 at the age of 45 years at 70 Ennerdale Road, Cleator Moor, Cumberland and the informant on his death certificate was Richard GEEN - Half Brother living at 26 Aldby Street, Cleator Moor, Cumberland. In 1891 Richard was living at 37 Jacktrees Road, Cleator Moor, Cumberland.

This suggests that William & Richard had the same mother who was originally married to William's father who either died or she divorced and then married Richard's father.

Can anyone help?

I rather suspect that William may be illegitimate.

Did he have a fathers name on his marriage cert?

I've not been able to identify a marriage certificate for William. He had three children (Catherine (b:8/6/1877, George (b:14/4/1882 & James (b:3/9/1879)) registered in Whitehaven, Cumberland and in each case mother was given as "Elizabeth Taylor formerly Rule". In censuses she is identified as wife of William born c1843 in Camborne, Cornwall.

Thanks for all your suggestions. The marriage of William GEEN and Ann TAYLOR looks promising even if this means William TAYLOR (c1841) was illegitimate. I will follow this route and see what happens. Thanks again.

I obtained the marriage certificate for William GEEN & Ann TAYLOR Sep 1841 in Barnstaple (Vol 10 Page 37). It shows Ann's father's name as Thomas MARTIN so probably she was first married to a TAYLOR which would explain the half brother relationship between William TAYLOR and Richard GEEN (on William's death certificate) and means that William was not illegitimate.

I know where Richard GEEN was in 1851 (see above from FannyByGaslight) and in 1891 he was at 37 Jacktrees Road, Cleator Moor, Cumberland with his wife Mary Ann (c1839) and children Mary Jane (c1872), Alvina or Alvena (c1875), Thomas Henry (c1876), Elizabeth Ann (c1880) and James William (c1884) but I cannot find the family anywhere in 1881.

I have tried findmypast and LDS but even the uncommon name Alvina does not generate any results. Can anyone help to trace them in 1881 please.

Thanks. I keep getting the same misspelling of my name - some people think Wildig does not sound right so add an 'n' to make it Wilding.

I've just looked at the original census image. I think the name has been incorrectly transcribed - in the original image my view is that it is clearly GEEN.

If you go to FMP you can put in a correction for it.

It is def your lot.

Now to find something for myself that refuses to surface at the mo..
