There is an article in the Liverpool Mercury 16/01/1852 about Thomas' death.
"At about 6 o'clock on Saturday morning last a man named Thomas Strickland was hooking some waggons to an engine opposite the old goods station of the North Union Railway Wigan. In consequence of the slippery state of the line he fell, and the engine caught him, and rolled him underneath, by which means he was so severly crushed that he died the same evening."
How awful.

Do I remember you saying you have access in Wigan library on Fridays? Apologies if I am wrong.

Just log on to the lancashire library site, choose search, then 'online reference library' then 19th century newspapers.

It will then ask for your library bar code
