Buy the certs. Without certificates you will never be sure of the line.

Regarding Maurice birth, he could have been born end of Dec 1910 and registered in the New Year. You had six weeks to register a birth. Births are registered by quarters.

Jan, Feb and March registrations are listed MAR. April, May, June are listed JUN. Hope that clarifies things.

My dad born end Nov 1917 was registered under Mar 1918.

Well you have 3 certificates to buy there.

Read the Tips for Newbies and get yourself a sub to ancestry.co.uk otherwise you will be floundering.

Im not sure if you need to search for Preater as they will not be related to you.

Re your grandads birth ref. There was up to 6 weeks in which to register a birth.

Tamar Report 13 Sep 2008 22:50

TY Heather,

I will now try a search with Preater!

Your mum and dad married 1st Q 1972 Eton 6a 960

On the ref the name is spelt Preater by the way.

Buy the cert for his fathers name (hopefully)

Using the above ref go here and complete the form:

I'm assuming she was still using the surname Preator when she married my father, but am not sure. She and her previous husband had my Eldest brother, Anthony Maurice Preator DoB 03.01.1963. He changed his name (though not officially) to Stone when my mum married my dad.

My mother and father then had my eldest brother Philip Michael Stone 05.10.1973.

I was born Tamar Stone 13.02.1978.

My mum told me he changed his surname to that of a cousin (?) because he preferred it to his.

Tamar

Tamar Report 13 Sep 2008 22:41

it could possibly be, I think his birthday was actually either 18.12.1910 or 18.09.1910. It could possibly be him if there was a delay or mix up of some sort, or maybe he just fibbed about being a toyboy?

Heather

Heather Report 13 Sep 2008 22:40

Well you have your grandads birth ref above to work on for his side/ancestry. Buy it from GRO online for £7.

Where was your elder bro born?

Heather

Heather Report 13 Sep 2008 22:39

Why did your father change his name?

Tamar

Tamar Report 13 Sep 2008 22:39

As to whether he was married before, I'm not sure. My mum told me years ago that she always suspected he'd had a previous relationship and possibly children from comments he made but it was never outrightly discussed

This looks like your grandads birth:

Births Mar 1911
Neech Maurice G Cambridge 3b 413

My Mother was born 04.12.1941 and it was her second marriage - I don't even know where they married! It's just so frustrating not being able to find anything that even looks like them to try and investigate any deeper!

I tried contacting somebody who appeared to have a few similar people on their tree but have had no reply, this person keeps coming up when I try my mother's name and uncle's so thought that they possibly have connection...

Heather

Heather Report 13 Sep 2008 22:30

Well, I guess you have tried searching the trees on here using the Search Trees tab at the top of the page?

And you can buy your parents marriage cert and your grandparents marriage cert for further information.

If your father was born 1932 was the marriage to your mother his first? as he would be rather mature for a first timer. When was your mother born? Ah just seen your mother appears to have been married twice too.

Where did your parents marry? Where was your brother born?

Hi Ericthered,

Unfortunately she doesn't like talking to me about it very much and when I do try to clarify details she tells me that 'maybe he doesn't want to be on a family tree' I think she has this fear that after bringing all of us up on her own for nearly 35 years she's suddenly not good enough or something. I understand that in her view the relationship ended badly so explains her reluctance. However I just want to trace my family as something for my 2 boys to have.

Tamar Report 13 Sep 2008 22:18

Hi all,

I am new to all this and already have come a bit unstuck. I am trying to trace my side of our family tree (my husbands uncle has already done their side!)

My maiden name was Stone and I am trying to trace my fathers side of my family. I don't know a great deal other than the little my mum has told me. Unfortunately I have never met him so cannot clarify any details. The details I do have are that his name was Michael Stone (however he changed his name prior to meeting my mum and I don't know his original Surname) I know that he was born in 1932 and married my mum sometime in the late 60's early 70's as my brother was born in 73. My mum's name was Carol Jennifer Preator (Maiden name Neech) I have found a few references to my mum but nothing about my dad. As my family now only consists of my mum I am finding it hard to get the details of family past her, I have my grandparents but nothing of their siblings or parents My grandfather was Maurice Gilbert Neech, Born in Cambridge in 1910, he married my Grandmother Gwendoline Wright, Born in Cambridge in 1909. I know they both had a few Sisters, I remember meeting a few but was to young to remember many details.

If anybody thinks they have any info relating to my father or the Neech and Wright families from Cambridge, I would be grateful.

Thanks

Tamar
