Find Ancestors

In the Scottish census of 1881 there is a family of Stevensons living with a family headed by what looks like Peter Buchanan aged 53 with wife named Agnes. The census shows her age as 5 which I know is not correct. They have 2 sons Peter aged 20 & William aged 15. The census shows a William Stevenson son-in-law aged 20, Janet Stevenson daughter aged 22 who I assume was Buchanan before marriage & a grandaughter Agnes Stevenson aged 9 months. All the above were born in & around Falkirk. I would have thought that I would be able to find info about them on the 1871 census but no luck on Scotlands People. Can anyone help? The confusion is that another Janet Stevenson with the same birth year appears in the1871 census, daughter of Alexander & Helen Henderie Stevenson also has a Agnes Stevenson aged 2 born illigitimately in the 1881 census.

Obviously, the woman married to Wm in 1881 was a Buchanan, but what has that to do with connections to your relations?

When researching for Janet of my family, in the 1881 census, could not find her, but found another Janet Stevenson ( nee Buchanan ) with the same birth year, married to William Stevenson, b c1861 living with the Buchanan family also with a daughter named Agnes Stevenson, aged 9 months, b 1880, Falkirk
During the early 1940's I was staying with my father's sister, Ada Stevenson in By-Plean, Bannockburn, Stirling, at that time married to Andrew Sneddon. Also living with them at that time was an auntie Agnes. I do not know whether she was a Stevenson or a Sneddon or her age at that time although she was quite old.
Ada Stevenson was b 4th Q 1905 in Manchester. Her mother died early the following year & Ada was sent up to Scotland to be brought up by relatives. i do not know which member of the family took on this responsibility as the Scottish 1911 census is not on-line yet, maybe it was Agnes!
What I am trying to establish is where the 2 Janets & 2 Agneses were between 1881 & 1901 & if the William Stevenson living with the Buchanan family is any relation to my family
Do you know the date & birthplace of Francis Stevenson?

If Janet Stevenson was an unmarried mother, why would you think that she is the same woman as Janet Buchanan?

I know very well that Janet Stevenson in my family & Janet Stevenson ( nee Buchanan ) are not the same person. The important part is their daughters Agnes, I think one of these brought up my relation Ada Stevenson born 4th Q 1905 in Manchester & brought up by relatives in Scotland after the death of her mother in 1906. I will not be able to research much further until the 1911 Scottish census is on-line
Francis Steveson was the father of William Stevenson & referred to info that Kath provided

This is Alexander (Robert's father) with his family in 1871 but his wife is down as Helen Henderie.
On another site, next to the census is a note from a member stating that Alexanders wife was Muirhead not Henderie & could possibly be Helen Henderie Muirhead.

Have I totally lost it or are we now looking to find out if Robert b. 1864, Alexander (Robert's father) and Francis Stevenson are related?

The 2 Janet Stevenson's are not the same person, the one is the Janet Stevenson b30.01.1859, sister to Robert Stevenson shown in the1871 census with a child Agnes Gibb Stevenson age 2 shown in the 1881 census. The other Janet ( nee Buchanan ) is married to William Stevenson, also with a daughter Agnes, aged 9 months. I found her when I was trying to find the Janet who is Robert's sister who seems to have disappeared. I am not sure if William is related to my family or not. If he is it would be as a cousin and from different parentage.

What I have so far is 1861 census:-

1871 Scottish census has 691 people named Stevenson in Stirlingshire.............so it's a very common name, and unlikely that all of them are directly related to each other
