Somewhere there is a link, between Robert and my husbands family,

Unfortunatley, All I have is his name, and an inscription from a book , I'd be grateful if anyone can find anything on him. I've looked on freeBMD and freeCen and cant find him,

The inscription is

Robert Star, that is my name
And England is my Nation
Larling is my dwelling place
And Christ is my Salvation
When I'm dead and in my grave
And all my bones be rotten
When this you see, Remember Me
lest I shall be forgotten
OCT 15 1858.

Larling is in Norfolk.

He was a greengrocer in Ovington (sp?)

Larling would have come under Wayland registration district then but that does not help with finding a death registration. It might not have been registered.

Norfolk has an online site for family history - google NOAH - you might find something there that will help.

I have found him on the 1851 census
He is age 19 an unmarried ag lab, son in law (which usually means adopted son, or child from a wife's first marriage) of a Francis Barker.

Just had a look at the 1841 image. Lots of Barkers on the page. Lots of children aged 5 and 10 so I'm wondering if the enumerator was rounding down the childrens' ages as well!

How do you know he was a green grocer in Ovingham if he died in 1858?
I am confused, do you mean this inscription was not from a grave?

Janice

Janice Report 1 Nov 2008 16:57

It says in first post, inscription from a book.

If we are looking for a link between Robert and your husband's family - perhaps it might help to know who your 'husband's family' are?

the original message said it was an inscription from a grave ...

Fran

Fran Report 1 Nov 2008 17:50

ok inscription is NOT from his grave, I thought it was.

We went to Larling to look him up and went to the Norfolk Records office but didnt get very far,

We were told by mother in law (how she knows I dont!:) ) that he was a greengrocer,

I feel really bad about not thinking this one through, so i humbly apologize

not even sure which part of the family he relates to, but could be the Rasbarrys of Swaffham...

There's one on the 1861 census. He was born 1832 Ovington and is a lodger in Larling. He's an ag lab.

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 1 Nov 2008 18:48

In 1881 he's aged 49, born Ovington, living in Larling. He's still an ag lab but his wife Ann was a grocer. She was 52 born Tibenham.

doddsy1 Report 1 Nov 2008 18:54

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 1 Nov 2008 18:56

In 1871 the name is Starr.
Robert was 39, ag lab, born Ovington.
Ann was 42, school mistress born Tibenham.
