I'm sure I must have asked for help with this in the past - but I'm really stuck, desperate and downhearted ....
I have the marriage cert for my Gt Gt Grandfather in 1871. He is named as John Smith aged 32 and a Tailor - High Street, Tunbridge Wells. His father is named as James Smith [deceased] - also a Tailor.
I have his wife's death cert in 1879, 5 Park street, Tunbridge wells - informant John Smith. [ where would she have been buried I wonder?]
My difficulty comes in finding a birth record for John Smith because I've had to assume that he was born in Kent, 1838/39.[possibly Tunbridge Wells]. There is also confusion over his name because variably it is John or John James.
Without his birth cert I can't go back any further and I'm even wondering how much it costs to hire a professional genealogist - the alternative is to go out and shoot myself ....
