In the 1851 census, one of my ancestors gives his birthplace as "Oxon., Alskot".
The record is
www.genesreunited.co.uk/records/srzoomer.aspx?ff_type=20&key=238697
and the transcriber's version (Alskot) is
www.genesreunited.co.uk/records/srview18x1.aspx?ff_type=19&key=424466

There is no such place in Oxfordshire as far as I can see. There is an Alscot in Bucks, and an Alscot Park in Warwicks, but these are a long way from his known places of residence (Burford Oxon 1808-1813, Hook Norton Oxon 1813-1858.

I have checked every spelling variant I can think of for this placename and nothing comes up.

Any ideas, suggestions or identifications welcome.

Sorry to be so long in responding (holidays). Margaret Rose found the right person, but I did not mean it to be a sort of mystery, so my apologies (did not occur to me that the links might not be of use). Thanks to all who commented, and for the suggestion of "Alvescott" as a possible explanation.

Regards to all.
