I am unable to pinpoint Herbert in 1891 or 1901 - can anyone help me please? I know he was definitely alive in 1896 as he was a witness on his brother's marriage cert. |

I did try 1901, with that Smethwick place of birth too, and unfortunately, no luck. |

Thanks very much Janey. The Handsworth Herbert is the best bet as Smethwick is close to Handsworth, both have moved around a lot regarding where they come under! Smethwick is now Sandwell and Handsworth comes under Birmingham. I'll have a closer look at Herbert now. |

Thanks so much for checking Janey - unlikely in the extreme that we would have a clergyman in the family, so you have saved me wasting time by perhaps wasting your own!! I think Herbert has gone on the run! |

Janey, the Smith's - actually my husband's ancestors - seem to have originated in the Worcestershire area as far as I can tell. No Nottingham links so far! Would be a funny co-incidence if you do indeed have a Reuben. |
