Trying again. John Smith born Germany c1841 need help in finding record of his birth, my great great grandfather. He married Mary Ann. Lived in Shadwell, London, was a Wharf labourer. Had several children including my gr grandfather George James who married Catherine Farrow and they had my grandfather George Alfred who married Martha Jowers.
Interested to know how I can find record of his birth.

no john smiths born germany but plenty of johann schmitt's. there's over 200 records so need more info. do you have his marriage cert? if so whats his father's name?

The only information I have about John Smith is what I have said. I do not have any birth marriage or death certificates for John Smith. I am also looking for a birth certifcate for his son George James Smith born 1875. My grandfather's brother joking reference about grandad Schmidt as he looked at a photograph of an old gentleman with 'Von KLuck' written under it (German general in 1870). So he could have changed his name to John Smith. Many thanks.

You will really need to get a birth cert of one of his children to determine mothers name. Then John Smith marriage cert to find his fathers name.
