Hi, This isn't for me, but a friend, who I am helping. We are trying to trace back where the Windsor and the Smith got merged.

On the 1901 census for her grandfather, Bernard, it is written Bernard W Smith (born Hull), the same is for the rest of the family, on his birth record it is written Bernard (Windsor) Smith (middle name Windsor), and death record it is Windsor-Smith.

I think I have found a record of his parents for the 1891 census, Richard Smith and Clara F Smith, living in Lincolnshire (I believe), but no W, I think I may have traced him back, further as the family were Drapers, but there isn't any W.

Richard was from Cheshire and Clara from Hungerford. They moved to Sculcoates before 1901 census.

Any Ideas?????? I've been searching all day, I would love to know the answer now!!

Thanks in advance for any ideas, Alison

If the birth had Windsor as a second forename, it would seem that the affectation of the double-barrelled version of the name was something this person started himself.

Do you think the name may have started with Richard then?, because 1901 census shows they all have W in the middle part of there names. It may have begun with Bernard, but I find it strange they all had it!!, but not on the 1891 census.
