Laura Howard was born in North Walsham, Norfolk in 1895, the daughter of Henry Samuel Howard and Laura Mary (nee Watts). On 12 Feb 1916, in the Wesleyan Chapel at North Walsham, she married a soldier, newly recruited, and stationed to undertake training in that town - Walter Frederick Carter (b Snettisham, Norfolk 1892). He was killed on the Somme on 5th Oct 1916 - just 8 months later. Laura married again, this time in Trunch, Norfolk on 15 Sep 1917 to Alfred E. G. Smith (b Oare, Kent 1893).

Laura visited Walter's grave at the Cerisy-Gailly cemetery (south of Albert) sometime around 1919, having previously selected, as next-of-kin, a haunting and enigmatic inscription for his gravestone: "Until The Morn". Her address, recorded at the time of visit by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, (and, I presume, also that of Alfred Smith's), was 12, Upper Brents, Faversham, Kent.

I wonder what happened to her, afterwards? She is not a relation, despite the same surname. Walter Carter was my great-uncle.

I'd be glad to hear from anyone who might be able to cast a light.

Thanks,
Richard Howard
