Hi Karon. Re: Sidney Stoddart (Stodhart) Smart.

Sidney's mother Ann Smart, nee Stodhart, was born in Islington, in the borough of Finsbury, London in c.1826. She was the daughter of Rob and Sophia Stodhart, born c.1780 (both aged 60 in 1841 census). Ann was given as aged 25 and had two sisters, June and Mary, aged 24 and 23 living at home in 1841. I guess that there may have been some other children who, by then, had left home.

One such sister living away from home was Charlotte Stodhart who remained a spinster until her death in Islington at the age of 67 in quarter ending March 1885.

As you know, Ann and Joseph Smart had 3 children by the year 1861 including Stephen.

The son who you named as Merton was in fact Wharton Smart, aged 2 in 1861.

Wharton Smart lived with his aunt Charlotte in the 1871 and 1881 census in Providence Place, Islington (the same Providence Place where her father and mother had lived), where Charlotte's income consisted of renting housing property. Wharton died in Islington in quarter ending March 1883. He was about 23. Two years later Charlotte died in Islington at the age of 67.
It seems that she had lived there for most of her life.

As a matter of interest and speculation, Joseph Smart was a Chair Maker by trade as was the lady Mary Smart who lived next door. She may have been the mother of Joseph.

Interestingly, Joseph was also the Parish Clerk.

Typing is not one of my strong subjects so I will leave it there. Hope it helps a little.

Very best wishes to you and your family.

Fred.
