Hello everyone! Have seen how helpful everyone is on this site and am trying my luck. I am trying to research the adoptive family of my grandmother and was hoping that if someone was intending to visit the SRO in Edinburgh. As I live in Australia, the time taken to receive ordered copies can take up to 8 weeks.
It has been a pain staking task and all the information I had originally was the name of the adoptive parents (and even that was sketchy). In the past few months I have managed to add 80 "family" members to this tree ancestorally (may not appear a significant tree to many) and now I am trying to find living relations.
My mother has found a number of photographs that are directly related to the adoptive family and, being who she is, was hoping to return them to their "true family". I have a couple of verifications that I needed.
Death Cert - George Berry Simpson - died 2004 aged 74 - FIFE (KIRKCALDY) /FIFE GROS Data 421/00 0318.
Birth Cert _ George Berry Simpson - Birth record 1930 SIMPSON,. GEORGE BERRY - KIRKCALDY /FIFE - GROS Data 442/00 0264
Birth Cert - Anne Berry Simpson - Birth record 1927, SIMPSON, ANNE BERRY-KIRKCALDY /FIFE GROS data 442/00 0253
Birth Cert - Jane McGregor Simpson - Birth Record 1916, SIMPSON, JANE MCGREGOR - KIRKCALDY AND ABBOTSHALL /FIFE - GROS data 442/00 0441
Hoping to verify parents details and whether certificate signed by a living relative.
Death Cert - George Simpson - Death noted as 1960 aged 77 - Kirkcaldy - GROS data 442/00 0324 I believe this George was married to Helen (Ellen) Berry. Again I am hoping that the certificate may have been signed by a son/daughter.
If anyone out there is in a position to assist me, I would be most grateful.
If there is any additional information that may be required, please let me know.
Thank you all in anticipation!!
Regards, Eric Melbourne, Australia

Had no idea about that website, Linda. Thanks for the info - I'll give that a go.
Perhaps I need to come over for a holiday!! Rather an expensive way to get the certificates, but a good excuse to go overseas again!
Thanks again!

Appreciate your humour Ann.
I stayed in Burntisland my last visit - in a B & B along the High Street. It was actually only 2 doors down from where my grandmother was born. Quite nostalgic.
I am rather eager to get the details of the "Simpson" descendants - so a trip may be in order!!

I have tried the Fife Historical Society website and cannot access the Guestbook. Also tried emailing the contacts to no avail.
I've also located the record for Birth of George Berry Simpson. 1930 SIMPSON - GEORGE BERRY - MALE - KIRKCALDY /FIFE GROS Data 442/00 0264
Still hoping that someone may be able to assist with viewing these documents at the Registry Office to verify family names.
Thanks all, in anticipation.

Have you tried www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk,it is a paying site but it is very good. I live in OZ myself and I know how hard it is from here to search,we cannot get BDM for Scotland only census. The IGI batch nunmers don't go to 1930,latest births 1875,hope this helps.

HI Susan, Thanks for the above info. I have access to scotlandspeople - this is such an amazing tool.
There is a bit of a twist to George Simpson (b 1883). Never sure whether to include the "skeleton" or not ...LOL ...
Basically, George was the illegitimate son of Cecilia Cant. I've traced and viewed all the doc's for this one and it's all confirmed. Born under the name George Cant, but brought up under the name George Simpson. Quite possibly told his father had died (whether true or otherwise).
George is noted as Grandson on the 1901 Census for Robert and Christina Cant - Burntisland.
Marriage cert for George Simpson and Helen Berry indicated father - George Simpson (deceased) and mother Cecilia Cant (subsequently married to Alexander Young).
Cecilia and George were never married.
Hence the reason for wanting to view the actual certificates I have located - I'm intrigued and at the same time have reason to try and contact this family (if there are living relatives of course).
Gets all very involved (and loving it)
Regards, Eric

Every little bit help, Susan!!
I reckon somewhere along the lines I will get a "visual" of these certificates. Will give it a week or so and then perhaps just bite the bullet and order them. It's a bit of a gamble, but wirth it in the long run.
Thanks again.

Thanks LInda - there are so many avenues and most of them I don't know about! LOL ... I'll keep trying the Fife website and see how we progress.
Alternative is for me to get a list of all those I need a copies of B,D,M etc and fly on over to Scotland. Thankfully Ann has said I can stay with her - now that's what I call helping out ...LOL
Seriously, I'll give it a few more days and then order them - it's getting very close to the Christmas break.
Appreciate your help Linda!!

Hi Susan, Kathy was gracious enough to spend time at the Registry Office to look up the details. I'm yet to sit down and go through it all, but it's a start.
I did note a "family" name in Orr came through in what Kathy found.
Sounding promising.
BTW - Perth was magnificent weather wise - granted I was indoors most of the time at a conference held at the Sheraton (mining summit). Looking to move there (if all goes well) over the course of the next 3-6 months. Love the lifestyle.
Regards, Eric (back in melbourne - cold, wet and windy)

One kind person offered to do some of the document viewing on next visit to SRO, but I have lost contact with them and don't want to appear "pushy".

Suzanne that would be wonderful !!
Does the detail I am looking for make sense?
I've hit a very solid brick wall with the descendants of Cecilia Cant.
George Cant was born 27.09.1883 in Burntisland. Brought up under the name George Simpson.
Let me know if I can provide any other detail that may make your efforts easier.
Many thanks (again).
