Could anyone with Ancestry please look up WW1 Service Records please:

Have just found out that G'father was in Hampshire Regiment WW1. (as have photo and cap badge has been identified).
Born circa 1898. Sometimes known as William or Billy. Believe he joined around 1916-1918. Have little to go on to where he was born. Know is father was William Shaw. After War lived in W. London.

Can you confirm please. Were his forenames really Walter Frederick as described in the title of your thread? The reason for the question being that if he was commonly known as William or Billy it would seem more appropriate that his given first name was William rather than Walter. I cannot see a birth registration of a Walter Frederick Shaw in England or Wales 1896~1899 but there are numerous William Frederick Shaw births recorded in the period.

You say that you know that his father's name was William. Did that information come from your grandfather's marriage certificate? If so what was his fathers occupation and did the father have a 2nd forename? If you do have the certificate where and when did the marriage take place and who were the witnesses as these might provide a link?

I can't see anything else, but remember that unfortunately alot of WW1 records were destroyed in the blitz..... so it could be that this is all that is left.

Are you wanting to trace his ancestry?

The Medal Rolls index card mentioned above says -

'Theatre of War first served - France
Date of entry - 19th December 1915

Not likely to be the 1902 birth in Dudley.

Up to now it has all been a bit confusing..

Have marriage cert in 1924. Walter Frederick Shaw to Frances Clifford in Chiswick. His father is stated as William Shaw. Winesses were Cifford family members

Have William's 2nd marriage cert which states his father as Walter Frederick Shaw (horse dealer)also. This marriage was also in Chiswick. Know that William was publican at Packhorse & Talbot, Chiswick High Rd at time of 2nd marriage in 1916.

Assume that Walter's mother died but do now know where they originate from.

The medical card sounds a positive. Is it something that can be viewed?

Thanks to all who have helped. Really appreciated

What are the details on the 1911 census?

If you give the address I can look myself,

Bernard Report 7 Jun 2010 18:00

1911 4 Dorchester Grove. This is the address for the family Cliffords. That both William and Walter married into. Not where they were living at the time.

Believe that Walter would have been in the first world was then. Not sure where his father Wiliam was - Think he moved into the pub in 1914 (as located from website - deadpubs) in Chiswick High Road. - wonder if there is anywhere that I can find who owned the pub and what records would have been made at that time - maybe thats an avenue???

The family still lived in Dorchester Grove in the early 1930s (my father was born there).
