Find Ancestors

Hi,

I have the number and date of issue for a passport issued to Clifford Shaw in Manchester on 24th September, 1928.

Does anyone know if I can find any further info from this and from where?

I have been chasing this for so long !!

He went to Canada as a 'home child'

I have him arriving and I have his death in 1979 - I have even been over there and visited the grave!

He married in the 1940's to a 'Dorothy' and probably divorced fairly soon after - he had 3 children who don't want to make contact.

BUT, I am trying to find his birth to get the cert,

His father was George Shaw but I can't find his mother or his birth which according to his death was in Winton, near Eccles, Lancashire - September, 1911

Could his name have changed when he went to Canada?

Name - as on my first post - Clifford Shaw - and no, it didn't change - he was still called that when he died in 1979.

Mind you, I can't find a birth for him so it may have changed before he went to Canada!

Im not even going to list the possible births caus I know you will have looked at them

Hi Dea,

There are some passport application archives held at Kew, but only from 1930 - 1944. They are open after 30 years under freedom of info act.

A child could get a passport under his father's name (or his mother's boyfriends name for that matter) so long as he was "known" by that name and the father/boyfriend signed to agree this. This is regardless of what is on the birth certificate and the birth name does not appear on the passport. (I know of another case where this has happened).

The likelyhood is that the birth place & year are correct as they would be checked, so try looking at any Cliffords registered in Barton upon Irwell which covered Eccles & Winton at the time. There are only 6 registered on freebmd.

PS once the passport is issued in a name it can be renewed without any further clarification needed.

Change of name might be the case now, but in the past (even up to the 1970s) so long as someone verified you were known under a different name you could get a passpost in that name. My son & stepson had one, so did I until I re-married in 2000 and decided to get a new one. My stepson still has one (current and renewed recently).

Things have tightened up, but until recently you could change your name so long as it was not to de-fraud inland revenue/customs/commit fraud etc without having to go through any legal process, you simply became "known" by that name. Even changing your name by deed-poll did not have to be officially registered.

Dea, this probably doesn't help your quest though!

Out of the 6 Cliffords in the date/place the most probables are Boardman & Whitelegg the others have deaths registered in the UK.

Not the case as late as the 1980s. I, my son & stepson had passports in assumed names. No legal changes, just confirmation we were known by a different name! Even deed-poll changes were not registered.

My stepson still has a passport (renewed last year) in an assumed name.

Things were very different back then. You didn't have to supply any legal info on name changes! Anyone could call themselves anything so as someone could vouch for it. Like for like passport renewals meant you didn't have to go through any checks either.

Believe me, my stepson still renews his passport after 20 years without any checks, and he wasn't born with the same surname he uses now. (never legally changed), but what was legally changed anyway, there was never any real register or deed poll changes.

Just a thought that you have prob tried already but.
Have you got dad Georges occupation?have you tried the 1911 census for a man of that name with the same occupation in the right area for Cliffords birth?

Wow, thanks for all this very interesting info.

I will try contacting the passport office on Monday but I don't hold out much hope of ever solving this 'little mystery'.

Clifford was my father-in-law's older brother and was never spoken of in the family!

I have uncovered a lot of info on him but have never been able to find his actual birth reg to get the cert. and confirm who both of his parents were.

I know all about the other members of the family.

You never know, there might be something to be found now I have the actual passport number?
