We have a William J Scallon( b1894 in Monton/Eccles near Manchester) as a grandfather on our tree. We believe his parents were Patrick and Anastacia from Ireland born about 1850. Does anyone know about his grandparents or wife who may have Ellen?

Harold

Just had a look at his military record - he was mentioned in despatches for 'valuable services' - google London Gazette and check the issue for 23rd August 1918.

Parents of this William Joseph Scallon are listed as Patrick and Anastacia. This one was born in and lived in Eccles but appears to have been sworn in in Manchester and joined the irish Rifles in Belfast in November 1914.

Address at time of attestation (and address for parents) - 18 Pleasant Road, Eccles, Manchester.

This is pure guess work.

You need to buy the marriage certificate to find Helena's fathers name

There is a tree on Ancestry that has a William Scallon marrying Helena Phillips in Prestwich register Office, Manchester on 13th September 1918 and dying in Faulkner Street, Harpurhey, Manchester on 13th March 1970

BUT

the parents are listed as Stephen Scallan and Mary Toole.

This William Scallon was baptised in Wexford, Ireland in 1896 - born 16th June 1896 and baptised 17th June 1896.

Have you considered this marriage in the Barton I registration district?

I only suggest this as a possibility as the marriage on the Ancestry record has a definite date so its possible the owner has bought the marriage certificate which would give the name of the father.

There is this death for a William Joseph Scallon in Manchester, but birth date is 1896 and not 1894:-

Name: William Joseph Scallon
Birth Date: 16 Jun 1896
Death Registration Month/Year: 1970
Registration district: Manchester
Inferred County: Lancashire
Volume: 10e
Page: 1377

If this his him, then the cert. may have been registered by his widow.

EDIT:- just noticed the date of birth fits with the William Scallon that Ninjalady posted earlier, so is probably not him.

Wow, you lot are good.

Tenerife Sun your last entry is on the ball. These are, indeed, the children of William and Joseph. Derrik (died 1992) is actually my wife's father (estranged)

I'm just trying to piece it together. So William's parents are Patrick and Anastacia - I always suspected but is it now confirmed?
But I need to go through all the suggestions again to pin down Helena Philips.

Thanks everyone

Catherine

Catherine Report 9 Mar 2010 20:11

All that this proves is that Patrick and Anastacia had a son called William J. Scallon.
Whether it is your William or not is another thing.

There was a William Scallon that married a Helena Phillips but you need to buy their marriage cert. to check the father's name and occupation to see if it is the same one.

What bothers me a little about this particular marriage record is the fact that this William is not noted with a middle name, but it wouldn't be the first time.
The marriage cert. will also give you Williams age so you can work out his date of birth. Witnesses may also be family members which could give you another proof.
Only after seeing the cert. will you be able to say if your William is the son of Patrick and Anastacia.

Okay Catherine I think you are right. And I have just come across the Ascentry tree mentioned earlier which has different Irish parents (Steven Scallan and Mary Toole). I've contacted the tree owner for clarification. At first sight it appears to fit in because the Scallan spelling is different and this had been passed to my wife. But unbelievably Patrick and Anastasia also got the spelling confused. What is it with these Scallons/Scallans/Seallans/Sealans?

I've lost the plot. What marriage certificate do I buy?

Julcoe

Julcoe Report 10 Mar 2010 02:52

Harold,

You said that the list of children that "Tenerife Sun" gave you was the correct family.

So you need to buy their parents marriage certificte, which should give you Williams fathers name and hopefully his age.

You can buy certificates at ... www.gro.gov.uk

They cost £7 ( increasing to £9.25 from 6th April), and when asked if you have the GRO number tick YES

The GRO numbers are just the Volume & page numbers which I have given you here.
