Hi there,
i am hoping somebody can help me find any details as i can find about James Isaac Sandoe or his sister Sarah Jessie Sandoe.James was born in London around 1863 and Sarah in London around 1867. The parents of these two were Isaac Sandoe and Sarah Swayne. I would love to know who they married or anything really.

Anybody searching will want to have a look at all that has gone before.

The censuses, for ref, taken from the other thread -- it appears that in 1901 Sarah Jessie Sandoe was still unmarried, and going by Jessie.

Working backwards: here's Sarah in 1901, with nonsense for the relationships:

Name: Sarah Sandoe
Age: 62
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1839
Relation: Son -- it's blank, she's a widow, and obviously HOH
Mother's Name: Elizabeth
Where born: Whitechapel

Name: Jessie Sandoe
Age: 31
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1870
Relation: Daughter
Father's Name: Sarah
Gender: Female
Where born: Stepney
Occupation: machinist

Civil Parish: Mile End Old Town
Ecclesiastical parish: St Thomas
Town: Mile End Old Town
County/Island: London
Country: England

Registration district: Mile End Old Town
Sub-registration district: Mile End, Old Town, Western
ED, institution, or vessel: 19
Household schedule number: 224

None of the other people shown as household members have anything to do with them.

1891:

Name: Sarah Sandoe
Age: 62
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1829
Relation: Wife
Gender: Female
Where born: In, London, England

Civil Parish: Mile End Old Town
Ecclesiastical parish: Stepney St Thomas
County/Island: London
Country: England

Registration district: Mile End Old Town
Sub-registration district: Mile End Old Town, Western
ED, institution, or vessel: 18

Jessie Sandoe 22
Sarah Sandoe 62

Thanks Kathryne. I did find out that Emma Sandoe and Margaret Sandoe were born and registered as Cock as you suggested before, as Sarah was married to a Isaac Cock who i believe to be the same person as Isaac Sandoe

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 20 Apr 2008 04:32

Probably mother Sarah's death:

Name: Sarah Sandoe
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1839
Year of Registration: 1909
Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
Age at Death: 70
District: Bethnal Green
County: Greater London, London, Middlesex
Volume: 1c
Page: 101

JaneyCanuck Report 20 Apr 2008 04:38

That doesn't quite make sense, Lorraine -- that Sarah was married to Isaac Cock who was the same person as Isaac Sandoe.

Sarah Swayne married Isaac Sandoe, per the record. If she were already married to Isaac Cock and he was Isaac Sandoe, it wouldn't make a lot of sense for them to marry again.

... and yet there it is:

Marriages Sep 1852
CANTER Robert Shoreditch 1c 484
Cauler Robert Shoreditch 1c 484
CAUTER Robert Shoreditch 1c 484
COCK Isaac Shoreditch 1c 484
Edwards Maria Shoreditch 1c 484
Savayre Sarah Shoreditch 1c 484
SWAYNE Sarah Shoreditch 1c 484

Huh, odd one.

I wonder whether he did what I've discovered my Monck gr-grfather did -- "leave" the military and change his name!

But question -- have you obtained both those marriage certs, and do the details for both people match up on both certs?

Aha, from one of your other threads:

"At last i have found some info on Emma Sandoe.
Her mother Sarah Swayne was in fact married to a Isaac Cock in 1852 and she had Jane, Margaret and Emma with him ( or so i think ) Then they had Sarah and James Sandoe. The only mysterious thing is on her marriage cert to Isaac Sandoe she is listed as Sarah Swayne not Cock which i thought she would be listed as. So were the girls adopted by Sandoe? They are not listed in any census's at all as Cock."

Same fathers, same ages, for both the Isaacs and both the Sarahs?

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 20 Apr 2008 04:46

Mother Sarah Swayne seems to have played it a little loose with her age. The 1901 has her born in 1839 in Whitechapel, the 1891 has her born in 1829.

Could this be her?

SARAH SWAYNE Christening:
22 APR 1829 St Mary Whitechapel, Stepney, London, England
Father: JAMES SWAYNE
Mother: JANE
Batch No.: C025576

Lorraine

Lorraine Report 20 Apr 2008 04:57

Yes thats her because on her marriage cert when she marries Sandoe it lists her father as James . On the isaac cock marriage to Sarah Swayne his father was listed as Stephen and that he also was a mariner all the same details except surname... a bit fishy you think.

JaneyCanuck Report 20 Apr 2008 05:24

Who was Isaac Sandoe's father on the Swayne-Sandoe marriage? Stephen Sandoe?

No rush -- I gotta get home and make spaghetti.

Just reminds me so much of my Hill/Monck, though! Ernest Hill's father was Francis Hill, and when Ernest married as Ernest Monck, his father was Francis Monck ...

Take a look at my two threads about Ernest.

In TTF, just go to the Monck surname board (filter the TTF board by surname Monck).

I've got one up in Records Office now --

Military Records, 2nd Anglo-African, Anglo-Boer
http://www.genesreunited.co.co/boards.asp?wci=thread&tk=1032158

I'm lucky that I'm a generation later (Ernest born 1851), so I've got better records to be comparing.

My Ernest "left" the army to avoid getting sent to Afghanistan when he was supposed to be getting discharged in India -- that would have been c1878.

The Indian mutiny was 1857-59. I wonder whether your Isaac might have done something similar?

Ernest Hill married 5 years later as Monck. Isaac married in 1863 as Sandoe ...

But hmm, I'd previously found this Isaac in 1861 and thought he was likely yours:

Name: Isaac Sandle
(It says Sandle, but it was a boat ...)
Age: 28
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1833
Relation: Lg Seaman (Seaman)
Gender: Male
Where born: Stonehouse, Devon, England

Civil Parish: Vessels
Town: Beirut Syria
County/Island: Royal Navy
Country: England

Registration district: Royal Navy
Sub-registration district: Royal Navy
ED, institution, or vessel: Renown
Household schedule number: 1

If so, he was in the navy under the name Sandoe while married to Sarah as Cock.

Oh, okay, I'd found what looked like Isaac's father's death in 1840:

Name: Stephen Sandoe
Year of Registration: 1840
Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
District: Truro
County: Cornwall
Volume: 9
Page: 194

So was Cock the fake surname??

Maybe he married Sarah Swayne, the first time, as Isaac Cock, while he was, uh, on vacation from the navy. ;) It's possible! And then he was unluckier than my Ernest, and got pressed back into service. It's a theory ...

There's a host of christenings of children of Stephen Sandoe in the IGI (as in that previous thread), all earlier than Isaac apparently was.
