Hi All, Does anyone know how to find out what happened to people who landed at Ellis Island? My grandfather Thomas Addis Ryan, born 1882 in Oldham seems to have gone over in 1909 on the ship Caronia [in Nov]. He was a Master Mariner, so I'm told. I cannot find anything in this country apart from hs marriage to Sarah Jane Kerr [my gran] in September 1909 and the reference to Ellis Island from IGI record pilot. I would appreciate any help, please, Thank you. Joyce

Hi Jonesey,
Thank you, I do not know where my gran was living, so I follow that lead as well. Do you think that non immigrant mariner means he was perhaps just working out of NY? I did find oit strange that he had left only months after getting married and he had over the next 6 years had 3 children. Thanks again. Joyce

He was a passenger (Not crew member) on the 1909 trip so he may have been travelling to join another ship. His wife obviously remained in Liverpool. He obviously did not intend to stay in the US.

Where and when was Sarah Jane Kerr born?

JZ

JZ Report 5 Jun 2010 14:59

Hi Jonesey,

Sarah was born in Liverpool, 1882 died 1966. Her parents were Thomas Kerr and Sarah Brennan.

Hi That's great. Have not got that info - looks like she lived with her father while hubby was away! I notice that Charles Dowling was under Kerr on the 1911 one. He was adopted by Thomas and Sarah at about 5 months. I recently got his birth cert [info via 'trying to find'] but haven.t got any further. If he changed his name that could be the reason!! Thanks so much. Joyce

You may be able to find out more about Thomas Addis Ryan as if he was granted a master mariners certificate.

The record of when, where he got it might be found in the Lloyds Captains Registers which are I believe kept at the Guildhall Library in London.

You probably already have this but just in case:

Name: Thomas A Ryan
Death Registration Month/Year: 1933
Age at death (estimated): 50
Registration district: Liverpool
Inferred County: Lancashire
Volume: 8b
Page: 215

Hi Dea,
Thanks again. That's great. Agnes was known as Girlie. It was because her father always called her 'my little girlie'.

Hi Jonsey,
Yes I have tried to get info via the Lloyds register. Unfortunately, they are still indexing 'R' and I haven't had time to get up to London, but it is definately on my list of 'to do'.

Thanks Joyce

I did not have his death info. Thank you.
