Any Scottish experts able to help with our Scottish ancestors, please!
David Russell b 1809, Perthshire, m Elizabeth Adamson b1808 chn Elizabeth, David, John b Scotland, Wm Adam b NZ. Emigrated to NZ 1842.
Thomas Caradus b c 1795 m Jane Grierson b c1796 Scotland Chn Mary Ann, James, Jane, Margaret, Thomas. Emigrated to NZ 1842.
Young Elizabeth Russell m James Caradus 1848.
Caradus name may be corrupted (They took writing lessons after a day's work in NZ!) Found a Caradus reference in Lake district.
Elizabeth Adamson reputedly of Rob Roy McGregor line thro gt grandmother (Maybe earlier) who changed name to Patterson.(as many McGregors did.)
Those are all the details we have - but any helpful suggestions would be welcome on any of that bunch.

I'm assuming Elizabeth Russell m James Caradus married in NZ and you have all the details. Does it say where they were born? How old they are, etc? They should all be on the 1841 census.

David & Elizabeth Russell both appear to be from Perth. Elizabeth Jun b Falkirk
Thomas Caradus Poss. Coylton, Ayrshire b c 1800Jane (or Jean) Grierson b bef 1800 Scotland (That is a big place!)
Both families left via Greenock, but on different ships that arrived together in Auckland. Elizabeth Russell was married at 16yrs. James Caradus b 12/2/1823, Elizabeth Russell b 1832
Does that help?
Any reference to Caradus would be welcome. Sure the name changed a bit.

Meriel Report 13 Jun 2010 03:58

The 1841 census is not much help for Caradus - although it certainly has a few other possible variants of the name. I try to imagine what it would sound like with a broad Scottish accent.
The New Zealand tree has been well researched over the years, but I now know why they stopped the research at the first ships!
The census records I have access to from Scotland do not allow one to see any details. Is there some way of getting access to these?

Possibility. Does John fit? Other children may be with relatives. I'll have a look.

Unfortunately 1841 doesn't give relationships. Other than actually going to the General Register Office for Scotland, I don't think there's any way of seeing them.

Meriel

Meriel Report 13 Jun 2010 04:07

1841 Scottish census has David Russell, 32, Mrs Russell aged 34 & John aged 7, but that is the nearest I can get. They lived Silver Row Kerse, district 479 of census. Could be them but other siblings missing. Need the names of grandparents perhaps to fill in some details.

Meriel

Meriel Report 13 Jun 2010 04:12

We were both hunting simultaneously! Yes,that is a possibility. Wonder if there is a way of tracking further back with Elizabeth Adamson. Wonder how far the name Patterson is from her. Perhaps her mother/grandmother? There was a sister of Rob Roy McGregor who changed her name to Patterson - wonder if anyone has any links to that. (That would need to be about 4 generations earlier.)

Meriel

Meriel Report 13 Jun 2010 04:17

That second list could be where the other chn were at the census. Perhaps John Russell & Ann were the grandparents. First son was John (1833) Second son was David (1838) Is that the correct pattern for naming of chn in Scotland?

Ozibird

Ozibird Report 13 Jun 2010 04:24

As Rob Roy was born c1670, it's a long shot.

Gotta go for lunch now.

Sometime it is the wild cards that bring the success! One needs to be an eternal optimist in this game.

Meriel

Meriel Report 13 Jun 2010 07:07

Notice John Russell pops up twice aged 7 - wonder if he was in both houses, following the census collector! Suppose Silver Row has been long demolished - wonder where it was.

I guess you found them in 1851, Meriel. It looks even more likely the kids belonged to John & Mrs.

Thanks - I had not looked further into 1851 since the family emigrated 1842, but this actually confirms that Ann was parent to Thomas & Alexander, who prob were brothers of David who emigrated.
That is a great help & gives a few more names to work with. I have often found the info accessed via the siblings can release useful leads.

Happy hunting.

I hear that Scottish death certificates are very good. Would be worth getting Ann's.

rootgatherer Report 13 Jun 2010 09:08

If Ann died after statutory registration began, then her death certificate will give you her husband's name and occupation (although some of the earlier ones just say married or widow). It will give her parents names including her mother's maiden surname (provided the informant knew the details) and the informant's relationship to her and their address. If she happened to die in 1855, the first year of registration, then the entry gives details of all children whether living or deceased.

Having trouble finding a date for her death, so not ready for that yet. Where is a good place to find the Scottish death records?

Meriel

Meriel Report 13 Jun 2010 10:10

Please is someone able to tell me if there are lists of death records for Scotland? Need some lists like those for England & Wales.

rootgatherer Report 14 Jun 2010 11:30

You need to register with www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

I am sorry but although it is free to search you have to pay to see the results. £6 for 30 credits - 1 to view search results and 5 to view / download register entries.

Female deaths can be searched using both maiden and married surnames. You can narrow the search by entering a year or birth +/- a couple of years.

EDIT

For Ann Russell you can put her year of birth in as 1792 +/- 5 years. You can also select the County as Stirlingshire as that is the last area you have found her.

Using the free search facility, there are only 12 deaths of Ann Russell born 1792 +/- 3 years for the whole of Scotland and only 2 of these are in Stirlingshire. 1 in 1874 and one in 1883. Sorry I have no credits left to look at them for you.
