Any Scottish experts able to help with our Scottish ancestors, please! |

Is this the Lake District connection? |

I'm assuming Elizabeth Russell m James Caradus married in NZ and you have all the details. Does it say where they were born? How old they are, etc? They should all be on the 1841 census. |

The 1841 census is not much help for Caradus - although it certainly has a few other possible variants of the name. I try to imagine what it would sound like with a broad Scottish accent. |

Possibility. Does John fit? Other children may be with relatives. I'll have a look. |

1841 Scottish census has David Russell, 32, Mrs Russell aged 34 & John aged 7, but that is the nearest I can get. They lived Silver Row Kerse, district 479 of census. Could be them but other siblings missing. Need the names of grandparents perhaps to fill in some details. |

We were both hunting simultaneously! Yes,that is a possibility. Wonder if there is a way of tracking further back with Elizabeth Adamson. Wonder how far the name Patterson is from her. Perhaps her mother/grandmother? There was a sister of Rob Roy McGregor who changed her name to Patterson - wonder if anyone has any links to that. (That would need to be about 4 generations earlier.) |

That second list could be where the other chn were at the census. Perhaps John Russell & Ann were the grandparents. First son was John (1833) Second son was David (1838) Is that the correct pattern for naming of chn in Scotland? |

As Rob Roy was born c1670, it's a long shot. |

Sometime it is the wild cards that bring the success! One needs to be an eternal optimist in this game. |

Notice John Russell pops up twice aged 7 - wonder if he was in both houses, following the census collector! Suppose Silver Row has been long demolished - wonder where it was. |

I guess you found them in 1851, Meriel. It looks even more likely the kids belonged to John & Mrs. |

Thanks - I had not looked further into 1851 since the family emigrated 1842, but this actually confirms that Ann was parent to Thomas & Alexander, who prob were brothers of David who emigrated. |

If Ann died after statutory registration began, then her death certificate will give you her husband's name and occupation (although some of the earlier ones just say married or widow). It will give her parents names including her mother's maiden surname (provided the informant knew the details) and the informant's relationship to her and their address. If she happened to die in 1855, the first year of registration, then the entry gives details of all children whether living or deceased. |

Having trouble finding a date for her death, so not ready for that yet. Where is a good place to find the Scottish death records? |

Please is someone able to tell me if there are lists of death records for Scotland? Need some lists like those for England & Wales. |
