Find Ancestors

Can anyone help trace my g grandmother's ancesters. Georgina was born in Scotland 1852, father John Ross was an engine man at works (Driver) on her marriage certificate. Think the family moved to England but cant find birth certificate for georgina to give mothers name. Any help greatly appreciated - up against a brick wall.

Any idea where she was born or if she had any siblings?

Who did she marry so we can check the census

I think Georgina and her sister Jessie could tie back to this. Again John is a shoemaker, but it doesn't tie with her mother in later being listed as Mary Ross!!

Thanks but in 1891 she was married and on the census as georgina craggs so no go I am afraid.

Agreed Catherine, but I had a pm from Ann saying that Georgina was widowed then remarried William Craggs.

As you found she remarried using the surname Ross and I wondered whether she reverted to her maiden name when she married?

So if Georgina was married twice, which certificate do you have?
If it is the one to William Craggs, is she down as widow, and who else did she marry?

I have the certificate March l887 when she is down as widow status marrying William Craggs who is also down as widower status. I did check with the register office to ask if Ross was her previous married name or her maiden name and all they could confirm was that was the name she was using when she got married. The fact that she has her father down as John Ross makes me feel this is her maiden name unless it is highly coincidental and her first marriage was to someone who had a surname of ross. Ann

Yes I got this - obviously the sons william and john are to a first marriage either on dad William's side or on Georgina's. The son who was present at Georgina;s death was J R Craggs - now whether the R stands for Ross and was given to him to keep the family name of Ross going would imply that he was borne out of her first marriage eh? No that's not correct - the l887 marriage was georgina's second. Sorry if I gave you the wrong impression. Ann
