LOOKING FOR ELIZA ROOKE

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

Patricia

Patricia Report 20 Apr 2008 04:39

Hello everyone,
I am hoping someone can find for me PLEASE a ELIZA ANN ROOKE. Eliza was the daughter of Alexander Huddy Rooke and Frances Ann Stephens. She was born 7-7-1853 Probus Cornwall. In the 1871 census she was with her sister Gertrude at St Clements Cornwall after the death of her parents in 1869. In the 1881 census she was still with her sister Gertrude (Gertrude was married by this time to Richard Hooper) at Penzance.
I have been unable to locate her after the 1881 census.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You. Pat.

Found this on www.freebmd.org,uk ..... you should always check on there for all bmds. It's a free site, currently has the entries from July 1 1837 to about 1920 or 1925, hopefully will soon be up to 1983 as volunteers continue inputting the information.

Hi Sylvia,
Thank you very much for finding her for me. I did have a look at the BDMs but there were so many Elizas at different times I didn't know which one was her. Also I had thought that she may have came to Aussie with her sisters and brother as 4 of them came out together.
Thanks again. It is very much appreciated.

Pat

You are very welcome!

whereabouts are you in Australia?

We spent a year in Melbourne in the mid-70s, and I have modern-day rellies (emigrated in the 60s) all over the place. We were down there last in Seotember/October 2006 .. Perth to Adelaide to Darwin to Brisbane to Sydney, with sidetracks all over the place!!!

I daren't even think about the ones who went down there in the 1850s! Fortunately, there has been a One Name Study done on that family, so I haven't thought about duplicating their research.

I'm in Vancouver, on the West Coast of Canada.

Patricia Report 21 Apr 2008 01:05

Hi Sylvia,
I think I found the marriage for George and Maria. I looked at FREEBDM and found a George Bennett and Maria Hawken married Mar 1843 at St Columbo. I had the clue James Bennetts third name was Hawkin (Hawken) so I guess thats the one. (I HOPE).
I live in a small regional town Gatton about just over an hours drive from Brisbane QLD. I hear Canada is a lovely place. Plenty of rain. I wish we had it here. Everything is so dry.
I enjoy digging for family. I get excited when I find a new connection especially when they come to Aussie and have children. I have several that are hard to track as they are born after the records stop. But I still keep searching for them.
I have found that a lot of rellys travelled great distances from one state to another. I even found a relly in WA that had originally came from the Sunshine Coast in QLD. He was sent over there for a better education concequently he was married there and had children and died there. What a shock that was. I would have thought that they would have all been in the same area as one another. But families drift apart. Thanks again for all that info. You are a STAR. Your rellys in the 1850s where did they settle?
Regards Pat.

SylviaInCanada Report 21 Apr 2008 03:31

Hi Pat

That marriage sounds a real possibility. I too thought Hawken might be a clue to Maria's maiden name. I'll see if I can find anything on her ..... and if the family includes a sister Sarah!!!!

Most of my 1850s people seem to end up in SA. It was 2 families, brother & sister, who were siblings of my gggrandfather. An uncle had also emigrated in the 1840s.

There is a suggestion that a son-in-law ended up a guard on the gate at Broken Hill .. that is where there was a big riot isn't it?

BUT ... you talk about movement ........ some of the elders and their children (some born in the UK and some in SA) then got on a Mormon ship that was going to California, with the intention to proselytize on the goldfields there.

Fortunately, as I said, there has been a One Name Study group working on the problem for years, and I'm just sitting here reaping the benefit of all their work. One descendent does live only about 100 or 150 miles away from me in Washington State though ...... how weird is that?!

Mind you, the One Name Study group got themselves all messed up on recent members of the family. I got hold of a cd they produced about 1999 on the family tree. Imagine my shock to discover that my father was nowhere to be found ..... but my brother was now my father!!! That took me literally months to work out how to sort out ............ the guy running the One Name group wouldn't answer my emails. I have discovered why (probably anyway) ....... and he is my second cousin!

It comes down to dirty deeds in the genealogy world, and the fact that I think he thinks I may have the evidence to prove that he has done the dirty on his own brother by stealing all the work that had been done previously! What I do have are some letters that his brother sent to my brother back in the 1980s, and that were then forwarded onto me.

Fortunately (again) the descendent in Washington is willing and able to make the corrections on future "editions" ..... but of course that does nothing to solve the problem for people who get hold of that original cd.

anyway, off to see if I can find anyhting on the Hawken family for you.

Pat,

If you go to www.familysearch.org ........... the Mormon site .. lcick on Advanced Search, then scroll down to Advanced Search

Enter Richard Hawken in father's names
Nancy in mothers
1830 +/- 20 years
British Isles, England, Cornwall

you will get a listing of children born in Cornwall to parents with those names.

There are several of them, but the following are down as born in Padstow.

The BIG problem .. is that they re cords that have all been submitted after 1991 by a member of the LDS church, and there is documentation to back up the claims.

I suggest that you take this information as possible, don't enter it in your tree .......... but see if there is anyone living in or near Padstow who could check in the parish records.

Ann Hawken - International Genealogical Index

Hi Sylvia,
Thanks heaps for this. I didn't expect anyone to so much for me. I find that some people that want to be found just bounce out at you where others just seem to keep hiding.
Its lucky that you have a one name study being done but not so good when one takes anothers work considering how long it takes to get all this info. Yes there were riots at Broken Hill. SA records are hard to access as they want $ for info. Luckily none of mine (that I know of) went to SA.
I've just unravelled one of my problems this morning. I've been told by a family member that this person was born in England. Not soo he was born in NSW so I have been barking up the wrong tree for ages.It happened to be on my partners side of things. Wish they were as easy to find as you have found mine. Talk about rellys living so close. My second cousin and my first cousin only live 3 streets away from one another and didn't even know it. Found my 2nd cousin on this site .
Cheers. Pat.
