Addendum: Richard Rolfe b. 1807 circa was not born in Middlesex but where he came from I do not know.

Keith, if you want to do what the instructions suggest and actually give some information ... and ask for some assistance ... someone may be able to help.

Richard Rolfe born 1807.

You are related to him how?

You have this information how?

A census? with a wife and children?

Can you copy the census information for us or at least direct us to it?

After 1841 the census should state a birth place, at least as he reported it. Is there an 1851 census with him in it? Should we go looking for it? Not if you already know what it says and can copy it here.

It doesn't make sense for people to go hunting for things you already know. You tell us what you know, and we'll see whether we can find anything more.

Oh heck, I love a guessing game.

1851 ?

Name: Richd Rolfe
Age: 46
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1805
Relation: Head
Spouse's Name: Hannah Rolfe
>> Where born: Heston, Middlesex, England

>> Civil parish: Heston

Richd Rolfe 46
Hannah Rolfe 23 [?? - says "wife", looks ike "23"]
Thomas Rolfe 18
Henry Richd Rolfe 17
Ashley Rolfe 14
William Rolfe 10
Harriott Rolfe 7

??

1841?

Richard Rolfe 40 - states not born in county
Hannah Rolfe 35 - ditto
Hannah Rolfe 12 - children all born in county
John Rolfe 11
Thomas Rolfe 7
Henry Rolfe 5
Ashby Rolfe 2

Unfortunately, Richard isn't in the 1861

probably Deaths Jun 1852
Rolfe Richard Brentford 3a 25

or possibly Deaths Jun 1861
Rolfe Richard Brentford 3a 32

Marriages Dec 1860 ?
> Rolfe Hannah Brentford 3a 83
> THOMAS David Brentford 3a 83
Webb George Brentford 3a 83
Webb Louisa Sarah Brentford 3a 83

(George and Louisa are a couple in 1861)

If so ...

Name: Hannah Thomas
Age: 57
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1804
Relation: Wife
Spouse's Name: David Thomas
>>> Where born: Greenham, Berkshire, England

Civil parish: Heston

David Thomas 49
Hannah Thomas 57
Jane Thomas 10 (likely David's children)
Betsey Thomas 8
Joseph Thomas 4

Find David Thomas in 1851, try to identify his wife's death, determine whether youngest child might be child of Hannah Rolfe Thomas, get child's birth certificate/baptism to learn her surname ... try to trace her back ...

In 1851 there is one Rolfe born in Greenham, Berkshire:

Name: Elizabeth Rolfe
Age: 27
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1824
Where born: Greenham, Berkshire, England
(cooke and housemaid in Randall household)

Civil parish: Newbury
Town: Newbury
County/Island: Berkshire

Greenham seems to be the outskirts of Newbury.

In 1841 there are several Rolfes in Newbury.

Mary born 1776 could well be Richard's mother, if he was from Greenham.
Sarah her daughter 1816
James 1806 a possible brother
Samuel 1811 ditto

Things it would be worth investigating, in any event.

Thanks very much for the leads. Nothing like a fresh pair of eyes! Ashley Rolfe was my G/Grandfather. He was in the military for some time and disappears from the census for a while and reappears in Aldershot in 1881. I will also try and get a marriage certificate of the Hannah Rolfe 'second marriage', sometimes witnesses ie children can solve the mystery. Because of her age vs. the age of the Rolfe children it seems possible likely that Richard Rolfe was a widower at the time of his marriage to Hannah or Hannah was 43 in the 1851 census. 23 can look like 43 at a stretch.

Hope it helps!

The 1851 definitely says 23 (did you look?) -- but I think what it is, is the daughter Hannah, who was 12 in the previous census, wrongly recorded as wife in 1851.

Of course, if that was her remarrying, she had to be somewhere in 1851 ...

Here she is.

Name: Hannah Rolfe -- marriied
Age: 46
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1805
Relation: Servant
Where born: Grenham, Berkshire, England

Civil parish: Heston
County/Island: Middlesex

Or so I'd guess. ;)

Yes I have both the census records. My record does not show her place of birth however. Which system did you use for this pls? I have a copy of te marriage certificate but that does not list the place of birth as I am sure you know. Regards Keith.
NB: Yes I agree it is more plausible that this is the daughter. I am going on memory but I recall only one Hannah on the 1851 census. I will check this. The Berkshire lead is very helpful.

Read through again, Keith. ;)

Two Hannahs in 1841 household -- mother and daughter.

One Hannah in 1851 household -- daughter wrongly recorded as wife -- likely because Richard is shown as married and the wife wasn't present.

Wife was enumerated separately in 1851 in the household where she was employed as a servant; that's where the place of birth is shown.

I'm assuming the 1841 wife Hannah and the 1851 servant Hannah are the same person, but it seems like the only possibility.

The records I've shown come from Ancestry. I searched for the wife Hannah separately in 1851 and found the one born in Berkshire as a servant separate from the family household, since presumably she slept there on the census night. I expected to find her somewhere, if it was indeed her who remarried after Richard's death.

Thank you. You may be interested to know that Hannah Rolfe was born Withers from the marriage cert. I will have a look at that too. I also have a spare G/mother Elizabeth born circa 1812 who may turn out to be a Rolfe. Thaks you for your time. Regards Keith.

A spare gr-grmother?

A couple of my ancestors had spare wives ... maybe we're related! ;)

You're welcome!

One last question. Was that Greenham rather than Grenham?

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 5 Mar 2011 23:26

Urgh ... doing the search ... opening the image ..................

The image says

Berks, Grenham

but that's just what the householder put down, I imagine. Any chance Greenham is pronounced Grenham, as in Greenwich? Guess not ...

Keith

Keith Report 10 Mar 2011 23:03

I think it was an ancient name for the same place. I am going to assume this anyway for the moment. Thank you all for your help. Regards Keith.
