Emigration from UK to Utah - HELP PLEASE

Hi Everyone

I'm trying to find any record of when the Rhead side of my family tree emigrated to America.

I can only give a date range based on children's births but here's what info I've got:

Josiah Rhead and his wife Eliza (Lewis) moved from Burslem, Stoke On Trent, Staffordshire to Utah (I think maybe Fort Des Moines first but they settled in Coalville, Summit).

There's a 5 year gap between the last child being born in Burslem and the first child being born in Fort Des Moines:

Eliza Persis Rhead 09/05/1855
James Bourne Rhead 17/03/1858

So they moved sometime between those two dates.

Here are the other children born in the UK:

Edward Henry Rhead 09/01/1851
Eliza Persis Rhead 09/05/1855
Josiah Earl Rhead 19/04/1853

Parents details:

Josiah Rhead 26/04/1831
Eliza Lewis 04/11/1824

Married in 1850

Hope that would be enough information for anybody to be able to help me

Just to warn you, I'm having car issues at the moment so might not reply straight away / for a while

Thanks guys and gals

Hi Richard

Yes that's him!

I've got so much info on him, his children and the generations before and after, I just can't figure out when they left and most interestingly...why!

I shouldn't put (if all the childrenw went with them) because I know they did, because they died over there!

thanks guys, that's definately them, both of those records!

Managed to find a truck load of info on them, their children, the childrens marriages and their children etc. Just a bit perplexed as to when, how and why they went to Utah!

I've looked at Utah history and it doesn't tie in with anything I can see!

Oh dear! Is it on a bit of a go slow?

Thanks for your help Richard, it really is much appreciated. Just intrigued to find out what took them to Utah because they were farmers not coal miners which was the main source of employment at around that time.

So yes, thanks again and if you can't find anything don't worry about it

I haven't looked for immigration records, but this could be why your Rhead family left:

I have one surname from Essex whose family members were not members of the LDS Church. One branch of this family ended up in Salt Lake City and were members of the Church. They either converted before leaving England, or converted after their arrival in America.

Lisa that's absolutely fantastic.

Don't know how you've found that but that's amazing!

Natasha: You mentioned you have a lot of information about the family. You may know about this website, but since it includes dates of travel, there is a chance you haven't seen it. [It is the middle of the night here, I couldn't sleep so popped in here: I BELIEVE this information is about your family! (I'm not taking the time to read it closely.)]
http://www.xmission.com/~psneeley/Personal/prneele6.htm

(I would be interested to hear if it is your family, and if you already had the information. I look forward to reading the information tomorrow, as I found the first part fascinating.)

Hi Lisa

Thanks for that! I forgot to check back on this thread again sorry!

By coincidence I tried googling alot of names yesterday and came across that website and have been in touch with him, looks like they're a definate match and the info he's got is amazing.

I was totally hooked on that first part you gave me. I found myself getting quite emotional knowing that if Josiah hadn't become ill they'd have stayed on the original ship and possibly died before they got to Salt Lake City. Amazing really! I also read the info you sent me about why they woul;d have gone and that ties in as well because Josiah and Eliza are on the Mormon funding register for 1856 so looks like they converted before they left the UK.

Just by goggling different names I seem to be finding alot of info. For instance I have just found out a realtive working in the mines was injured - he fractured his pelvis - at the age of 64.

So it's very encouraging at the moment
