Hi,

Trying to find details on RAYMOND STANLEY POOLE - Service no. D/JX 198542 who was killed in action on 18/10/1941 when his ship, HMS Broadwater was torpedoed in the North Atlantic.

Can not find any records of his birth or his parents names.

Link to CWGC page for him > http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_details.aspx?casualty=2486165

Unfortunately, that's all the info I have for him but I want to see if he was a relative of my grandmother VERA POOLE.

If you can shed any light - I thank you in advance

Richard

Hi Polly,

Vera was born in Upton, Gloucs c1913. She had a brother Alfred born in 1917 but her father was killed on the Somme in 1916 and her mother (Mary J Mays/Poole) died shortly after - (exactly when is another dead end).

I don't think R S Poole is connected directly to them but I am hoping to find a connection to the POOLES of Gloucs/Cheltenham/Tetbury.

I discovered a site with a lot of my relations already on it > http://www.mitchellfamilyonline.co.uk/getperson.php?personID=I13185&tree=E1 - but the site owner, Roger is also stumped about Raymond. We just wanted to 'lay him to rest' so to speak and see if we couldn't match up this brave man to his proper family.

Thanks

Richard

Hi Richard
Do you know were your grandmother was born.

Richard

Richard Report 26 Apr 2010 13:09

Hi Brian,

Yes, VERA MARY POOLE was born on 14/04/1914 in Upton in Gloucs but the family - for some reason - moved to the other side of the country to suffolk (Trimley, Falkenham, Kirton area).

I've managed to get almost all of the mysteries solved myself but this one is still hanging around... I did a bit of research on Ray's ship, the crew and even the Uboat that sunk it and it would be a shame for me not to be able to pass it on to someone if he's not one of ours.

Thanks in advance all - you do a sterling job! For no pay and only abuse and annoyance judging by what's going on over on the main board at the mo....

William Charles Poole born 1865 in Cockermouth in 1901 census in Birmingahm has a visitor by the name of Joe Poole born Gloucestershire 1842 a cabinet maker.
Maybe he connects Raymond S son of Bernard in Birmingham to the Poole family from Glos.

Joseph poole was married to Ellen born Worcestershire @ 1842 on 1871/81/91 census in glouc.

Just plug in, HMS Broadwater, it looks like it may be interesting.

Hi Brian,

Yep, I've done all the research on the ship - it's just the man that was eluding me :-)

(It is very interesting - such a shame more didn't survive the sinking).

MaryB,

Hmmm, you've got me thinking now. I have a Mary J Poole death record for Cockermouth in O-N-D 1924 - age 36. We have no idea why a woman from Suffolk would have gone up there to die - unless there was a family connection.

This is what we have on Mary J Poole/Mays > http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_details.aspx?casualty=1548709 - and this is a definite.

I'll do some more digging further North now.

Many thanks for that

So is William Charles Poole 1865 Cockermouth actually Charles William Parke?????

Looks like it to me what do you guys think

Christiana Park married John James Pool in gloucestershire
J/A/S 1868 6a 412.

Bernard Park Poole 1894 parents marriage

William Charles P Poole ( P for Park)
married Alice Elizabeth Barnett J/A/S 1889 6d 182.
They had William Charles 1889 Bernard's brother.

This is one confused family.

William Charles P Poole = Charles William Park 1864 Cockermouth.

How on earth did you find that one? I've seen some transcription errors in my time but Poole to Parks etc - wow.

I'll look into the connection - someone said the POOLES went to Wales and Gloucester - but from where? (Probs POOLE in Dorset but..)

There seems to be a lot of swapping surnames around in the records. I've got BEARS and MAYS that seem to swap them when it suits! :-)

Hi,

Thanks for all your help. I passed on what happened to Joseph POOLE to the other GC member but I think Ray might be a red herring.
