Sorry Sylvia. I've spent 2 hours watching TV and then half hour dog walking but here now. First and last time I use the 'add' button. Certainly didn't work for me - message just disappeared into cyberspace.

As to the "well" it would seem you spotted it just as I was trying to edit it. My spiel was, to make a long story shorter, I mowed the grass back and front and then realised my lilac tree was wilting. That's never happened to a tree in my garden before but we've had so little rain here. Got the hose out and gave everything a good drink. Was then absolutely pooped so decided to have a quiet night in front of the box.

Is it all one big joke or are you flying into Manchester or Liverpool?

Where in Kent Michael? I lived near Bexleyheath for 4 years.

Hi Jeanie

it's all in cyber space!!

we've had "parties" in the past, all try to get on the thread at the same time

..... and in our imagination are there in person!

I wish I could get over there and meet at least some of the really nice people I've met on these boards.

I did think that was the case Sylvia but it was getting quite convincing I must say. I feel exactly the same as you do. I never used to understand why my son seemed to consider he had friends on the net. Now I'm with him. I've friends from NZ (relative by marriage) one 6 miles from here (distant blood relation) and GR helpers and chatters from many parts of the UK and, of course, Canada. Feel like you are a friend definitely.

I know little about Lancashire. I've been to Blackpool once for the lights and I've been to Manchester University (for a weekend for a conference - not to get a degree unfortunately!) but you may have gathered my sister lives in Bolton. Wasn't best pleased that she chose to go so far away. Only seen her 4 times in the last 13 years. Ah well, that's life.

Talk later I hope.

Of course Kelly, we do understand it's not always possible to stay online.
This thread is really intended for those who expect that any replies will automatically come throught to their Inbox.
Once people are aware that they don't, and replies come in very soon after posting, they are more inclined to stick around.
Thanks for making your point and please don't take it personally.
Cheers
Mike

PS for Jeanie - spent a couple of days in Sittingbourne, and very nice too !

Morning everyone!

Kelly

......... we all understand people have commitments ............... so do we!!

But there are people who do not understand how these boards work, who expect to be notified by GR that there have been postings on threads

...... and who post a request containing very little information as the last thing before they switch off for the night (or the rest of the day).

It has been estimated that most requests get someone looking at it within 2 minutes!

Quite incredible ......... but there are people on these boards from all around the world, and hence 24/7

Speaking as someone who is more often on during the UK late evening and night ...... it is most frustrating when you do find a request that you are certain you could help, but lacking some important data (such as date of birth, place of birth)

................................. you've seen the request less than 30 seconds after it was posted. You ask for the extra information within 60 seconds of the posting ........... and nada!

Is it really too much to ask for someone, in most cases, to stick around for 5 or 10 minutes, or to check back after 5 or 10 minutes???

Of course, if you are a carer, then you do have other responsibilities that take priority .................. but otherwise??????

I should point out that I do in fact do most of my helping when you all in the UK are fast asleep ........... so I'm perfectly used to posting information and having to wait for a response.

I'm talking about the requests that I can't help because the information just is not there

for example "John Murgatroyd Smith married Elizabeth Francis"

where??? when??? what do you want to know???? Do you have any more information?? Have you found them on any censuses??? Where did you get this information????

are all very valid questions that need answering before I can even begin to help!

OMG Sylvia. Do you really get them as daft as that? Unbelievable!!!

They shouldn't be surprised they do not get useful responses should they.

Off now to e-mail a newly found blood relative with some family information and to Google Famous Women for some inspiration:-)

And I thought I was a bit of a numbskull when I first put a tentative step on the boards. I didn't give much info but it was a little better than that
