Michael, thanks for saying that you regard the person who sent you a PM as a kind soul, as I have done it to many people and wondered if they thought I was interfering. Partly I wanted them to know that people were trying to help them and were being ignored, having started looking I was as keen on the outcome as they were (or not), etc etc.
I regard it as heartbreaking when you sometimes see how much work has been done, and no acknowledgement (even with prompting).
I have even felt like telling the person who is helping to stop, and wait for some feedback, because after a few messages and findings and no response it is time to move on until the postee returns and offers some input.
I do think genes should somehow make clearer that postees will not get messages sent to them automaticallty but will have to return to the board themselves, but I suppose we are all guilty of not reading the instructions.

Thanks Michael.
I'm here first thing as promised.
I really just wanted to point out that outside pressures can sometimes make it impossible to stay on line. I'm fostering an elderly dog (spent nearly the first 10 years of his life in racing kennels!). He has a bit of a weak bladder and suffers with chronic collitis - which both necessitate frequent outings.
GR members have been so good and helped me so much I was a little upset to find I may have offended. I usually say why I am leaving the thread and I hope people will understand.
I'm not on twitter and I'm now going to look to see if anyone has started one on the events in Moscow. What upsetting news.
Regards

Cynthia

It would be really helpful if Genes would put some guidelines up on this subject. Sending around 50 messages out per day is time consuming - I know I don't have to do it, but I feel sorry for those who don't understand the system.

I do get slightly annoyed however, with those who open my message but do not respond to it nor go back to their thread to acknowledge the work. I have been known to send an occasional pm asking if the work done for them was helpful but often don't get a reply to that either!!

Maybe we are living in an age where people aren't used to writing thank you notes so don't know what to put - but it isn't rocket science is it???

Guidelines for newcomers would be great! At first I thought I WAS replying when I clicked on "Add". Of course, I now know better. Perhaps if Genes did something that when you click on "Trying to find" the first thing to come up would be an Advice message on how to use this Board. What do you think Cynthia?

Do you really beleive it would be read ? !!!

Hi Jeanie, Genes steadfastly refuse to do do anything about this problem but I think something similar to what you suggest should appear on all the boards - maybe as a permanently 'open' message from GR; perhaps something like this:

"Please stay online for a while after posting your message as you may receive a response within a short space of time.

Also, please be aware that we do NOT alert you to replies on your thread, you need to check for yourselves.

As a matter of courtesy to our helpers, it would be helpful if you could acknowledge the work done for you.

To find your message again, click on Community, Board summary, My Threads. To reply, click on the Reply or Add button."

What does anyone think? Cx.

Cynthia

Thanks for replying. Think that ought to do the trick. I was really dumb when I started. That would have been a great help.

Must admit the first time I posted a Trying to Find message I had absolutely no idea there were people sitting there waiting to help out. I was expecting to wait days, weeks or months to get a reply. Didn't get a result from that one. Guess what - my fault again. Had the surname spelt wrongly and Uncle Sid's name was actually Henry Sidney!

Know now to click on FAQs just to see whether there is anything in there to help with a particular problem. Quite a lot of the time there isn't.

Now If I've had to leave the Board to do things try to return to check on my threads as soon as I can. While on the subject I thought the little icons next to the threads were supposed to show whether new post had been added. They do not seem to - unless of course I'm misunderstanding. Perhaps I'm being an idiot on this as well.

Regards

Thanks for your reply FBG. I had a look at the thread you mentioned. I do see what you mean. Know I'm an idiot too. I've only recently realised what the 'n' stood for. Have used it once myself now to get to the top of the Board when I was looking for Choccy to help me. She came back to me very quickly. Must say she's a wonderful helper like yourself.

Have to admit I get some corkers from the replies I get.

Just had one in fact. I sent someone a message last night advising that they had some replies to a query they posted the day before. Today, I get a response telling me that they always respond to info found for them and that it's there, underneath the replies and why can't I see it?

Having looked earlier, and knowing full well there is no response, off I potter to look....yep, it's there, added 2 mins ago!

lol
