Rosina Report 7 Feb 2008 01:26

My great great grandfather Thomas Phelps and his wife Jane Phelps nee Brown had a son James Phelps (my great grandfather) in Edmonton Union workhouse 21st March 1849. I have obtained the birth certificate.
However I cannot find the family again on any of the census returns but found a marriage in 1862 for a Thomas Phelps and Henrietta Rosina Brown I have the marriage certificate. and the following census return showed a son James Phelps and a son John Phelps. (James age matched with 1849)
Would anyone know if in the workhouse they gave the women names like Jane instead of their proper names or if they may have given that name because they were not really married.
My only other idea is that Jane may have died but I can`t find a record and then he maybe married her sister who took on the boys.I have no one left on that side of the family that I am aware of to ask about it. I would be grateful for any suggestions. I have written to the appropriate council for the workhouse at Edmonton but they don`t hold any records.
