Find Ancestors

Hello,
I am trying to help my Aunt track her ancestry. My problem is the following: My Aunts mother was called Ellen Grace Penfold. She was born in Lewes Sussex in 1913. According to her birth records her mother's maiden name was "Jenner" I have searched for hours for a marriage between a Jenner and Penfold. I have searched from about 1897 to 1916. I can find nothing. Is anyone able to help?

You really need to get the birth certificate for Ellen Penfold to find the full names of both parents.

Will I be able to obtain her birth certificate? She died in 1983.

Yes you can buy a copy of her birth cert from the GRO it will cost £7 if you use the GRO reference number

You may have to extend your search for the marriage. My grandmother was born in 1886. Her parents married in 1861. It was common to have children after 25 years

There is a marriage in Lewes in 1888 for Annie Maria Jenner. Unfortunately only 1 male name on the page

Also Penfold may not have been the first marriage to Miss Jenner,
If you know her parents names it maybe easier to find Mr ???Penfold marrying the mother in a previous married name.and her maiden name would still be Jenner on a Birth Cert,

An update.
I have now received the birth certificate. According to the birth certificate Ellen Grace's father was called Henry Penfold. Mother was called Minnie Amelia Jenner (mo mention of becoming Penfold in the relevant column). Though Ellen took the name Penfold I do not believe her parents were married. Place of birth is listed as a hut near Beechwood Pond Lewes Sussex. I've endlessly searched records for a "Minnie Amelia Jenner" but with no luck. Her occupation on the birth cert was a field worker so I am presuming she was quite young. I have tried Mary, Mary Ann, Minerva in place of Minnie. I've sort of reached a dead end.

She would have been painfully young to have a child, but it would not be unheard of.

There are several other Minnie Jenners in Sussex, and others elsewhere. Also Amelias, but none in Lewes.

You can also search for everyone with surname Jenner in a household in a particular place with a particular person in the household. Jenners in Lewes with Minnie Jenner in the household are:

One hesitates to think, and hopes not.

I just searched for all Jenner events in Lewes from 1913 onward, to see what might have become of Minnie. You may not have seen this:

That's conclusive, that Ellen's mum wasn't married, since Ellen was registered under both surnames.

Jenner cousins seem to have gravitated.

The only one google finds is in Pennsylvania. ;)

Knowing that could help place your Jenner, with one or another of the Ditchling and Chailey clans, possibly. She could still have been from away, and been a transient farm worker. Or from another location in the area.

It sounds from the birth certificate like she was very young, and afraid to approach her family when she went into labour, so went off alone to deliver. Or maybe she was in the fields working, and the "hut" was what was handy for the delivery.
