I have Pattendens in my tree through 2x great grandmother Sarah Wood and her sister Jane. The latter was born 1797 East Grinstead, Sussex. She married Henry Pattenden from Horne, Surrey and they had 13 children including Henry b1825 and Amos 1843. My records indicate Amos marries Jane Pattenden (b1853) in 1873 Horne. But it also appears she is the daughter of Amos's elder brother Henry. Is this a mistake or coincidence? If not was it legal? |

Yes that seems to be her after marrying in 1873. I think she then has 2 more children, Agnes and Dora. |

don't think it would have been legal for him to have married his brother's daughter - in fact I'm pretty sure it's classed as incest |

I agree Ann of Green Gables but my records do indicate Amos's brother Henry had a daughter Jane born in 1853 i Charlwood, Surrey - surely too much to be a coincidence - it must have been illegal and incest, oh dear! - unless we can prove otherwise |

Thanks Pollypoppet and Ann. And anyway they are distant relatives. But I wonder how they got away with it or indeed why did the family allow it? |
