I'd be grateful for any information relating to George Otway who died in 1941 in Kensington, London. |

Can't find George in 1911, but think this could be his father, also George : |

The father was in a Workhouse, not a jail. He's a wagon driver carman born London, Middlesex. |

Oh good, I got a bit worried there... I thought I was going to unearth something awful! |

There were about 1,000 inmates in the District Bradford Workhouse. You might find some information about it on the Workhouses website. Google Workhouses cos I can't remember the address. That was a large workhouse and probably wasn't much fun for the inmates. |

I'll look up Workhouses on Google, I don't know a lot about them. Would he have had to go there as he had no money? Sorry if that is a stupid question, I just have no idea! |

They're all back with grandma in 1911, as already posted: |

No mention of the daughters there though - Annie and Sarah. |

He would go there either cos he had no money to pay his rent, or he might have been ill, cos Workhouses were the only places to go for medical care. He could have been depressed (I doubt that, cos they would have called him an imbecile or similar) or simply nowhere to live. Chucked out by the landlord with no female relatives to look after the kids. He probably did the best he could at the time. Times were hard, back then. Our rellies did their best. Seems to me that your George did what he could for his kids. They may only have been in he Workhouse/School for a short time and back to granny. |

Sarah is in the children's home with the others in 1901. Annie is with her grandma. |
