OGLES - NORTH SHIELDS, TYNEMOUTH, SOUTH SHIELDS. I'm trying to find out info about the following elusive characters. JOHN OGLE. b 1793ish and married to ELEANOR. Their children, all born in North Shields [possibly Tynemouth.] were: ANN ISABELLA JOHN JOSEPH WILLIAM ELEANOR. WILLIAM was my great great grandfather. He married MARY ANN GIBSON. His children were: MARY. Married to JAMES HARRISON [mariner.] They had two sons. WILLIAM HARRISON [ mariner.] And JAMES HARRISON. He worked as a drapers assistant in South Shields. ELISABETH. Married to WALTER HEWITT. [mariner.] ANN. Married to WILLIAM REED. [School master in Coxhoe.] HARRIET. Married to JOHN MCCARTHY. Both John Snr and William were brewers. Does this ring a bell with anyone? If so I'd be really grateful for any info. These Ogles are proving very elusive! |

I agree with yr comment. I have a birth cert for a John Ogle b. 1895 to John Ogle and Jane Ogle nee Thompson. The Thompson side I know all about. The young John definately did exist but whether his name became Howgill or was born a mispronounced Howgill (also my family) I can not be certain. I am in Stockton on Tees. There were no Ogle's in the Stockton area around 1870'ish but some were in South Shields as was a Jane Thompson. The Jane in S.S. does not make much sense, so I keep wondering if a John Ogle the elder was either a sailor, a travelling salesman or a deliberate misspelling to throw off any doubting Thomas's puzzling about reduced gestation periods! Any ideas appreciated. |
