Hi,

Im trying to find as much information as possible on Alice Ada Nother, born in St Helier, Jersey in 1884, then moved to Southampton and married Charles Thomas Churcher in 1904... I cant find the date of her death and when she moved with her family to Southampton. Also if anyone has a photo of her or the family I would love to see it.

Many Thanks

Neil Churcher

Someone has corrected some census for this family on Ancestry..Maybe a message to them will be of help..Also have you searched trees on here or Ancestry for the names?
I have sent a correction in for the family on 1901 to say the name should be NOTHER..

Neil

Neil Report 28 Dec 2010 16:21

Yes but not a full member so cant get into the family tree`s. Thanks again for all your help...all I need to try and find out now is where they were laid to rest...... are you in the family tree ?

Thanks again :)

There's a private tree on Ancestry also, might be worth trying to contact?

Leave it with me until the Jersey Archive re-opens in January and I'll see what I can find out.
I should be able to find her birth registration and take a look at the certificate to find her mother's maiden name.
Going by an entry on the Jersey heritage website the family seem to have been Methodists.

Neil

Neil Report 28 Dec 2010 17:46

Yes they were, and I think her mothers maiden name was Keeping..I would like to find out what I can about the family and try and get some pictures as no one in my family has any pics of them which I find a shame and a pic of where they lived...dont know if this is possible...I would just like to say many thanks...

The 1871 has Daniel Hother (Nother) a baker born c1851 with wife Ellen and child Florence born 1871.

Baptism 26/03/1871
Birth 04/03/1871
Florence Nother
Father Daniel
Mother Ellen Vigers
Father's occupation Baker
Godparents Thomas Nother, Ann Vigers and Ellen Vigers

As this seems to be the same Daniel do you know if he married twice. It seems likely that this Florence died as there is another born in 1887 according to the 1891.

The info I have is Alice Ada Nother born 1884, daughter of Daniel Courtis Nother born 1853 and Selina Emma Keeping born 1860, these dates maybe a little out, but any info you can give me would be great... Is their anywhere I can try and get a photo of where they lived, worked or of them, this is a long shot...anyway thanks again you have been a great help

jerseylily

jerseylily Report 28 Dec 2010 18:28

I don't know where you found the name Keeping but have a look at the 1881 (free)

Name Age
Daniel C. Nother 26 - baker
Selina E. Nother 21
Walter D. Nother 3
Louisa E. Queen 57 - mother

And this

Baptism 10th August 1853
Birth 8th July 1853
General Hospital (which was also the Workhouse)
Selina Queen
(Illegitimate)
Mother Selina Queen
Godparents William Noles and Rachel Godel

Unless you can get in touch with a relative you are unlikely to find family photographs. Looking at their addresses on the various censuses you are unfortunately also unlikely to obtain worthwhile photographs. These areas have been extensively redeveloped and bear no resemblance to the way they would have been in the late 19th century.

In 1881 the family were living at 23, Aquila Rd and this is listed on the heritage site under that address, probably because it was next door to the Methodist Church.

D/W/E1/8 Rehabilitation studies and property surveys including photographs of properties in St Helier including in Albert Street, Aquila Road, Devonshire Lane, Devonshire Place, Dorset Street, Garden Lane and Great Union Road 01/04/1970 - 30/04/1970

Go to www.jerseyheritagetrust.jeron.je, click on Archives and then Place, type Aquila Rd in the search box and then click on No 23. Click 'order items/more details and the photograph is the only one on the 4th line. Taken in 1970 before redevelopment

You can find out where Alice and Charles are buried by contacting Bereavement Services at Southampton City Council. They used to do a look up free of charge.

I have found a marriage for Daniel Courtis Nother to Selina Emma Keeping between 1874 and 1878 in St Helier.

I will have a look at the marriage certificate tomorrow to find out who Selina's father was. It will also be interesting to see if either Daniel or Selina had been widowed previously, which might explain where Louisa Queen comes from in the 1881.

The Selina Keeping born in the Workhouse had the middle name Donaldson so although the age is spot on it may not be your Selina.
