Trying to find Robert Morrison (aka Cummings)

Anne-Marie Report 22 Mar 2008 04:34

I am trying to trace my gr-gr-grandfather Robert MORRISON (aka CUMMINGS) birth details. From the 1881 census records he was born about 1854 in Renfrew Scotland. He was married on 15 Aug 1880 to Mary Alice COX (b 6 Aug 1855 West Hartlepool Durham).

Witnesses were Robert FENWICK and Elizabeth COX both relatives of Mary and combined with their addresses listed on the certificates I know I have the right marriage certificate.

Based on the certificates & census details I have their names have varied as follows:

1880 Marriage Cert - listed as Robert MORRISON and his father was Joseph MORRISON.

1881 Census - listed as Robert MORRISON and Alice MORRISON.

1884 Birth Cert of son William Cox CUMMINGS - listed as Robert CUMMINGS and Mary Alice CUMMINGS formerly COX

1891 Census - listed as Alice CUMMINGS widowed with 3 year old son Robert. Their son William was at North Surrey District School.

The only thing I can think of is the person who completed the certificate totally messed it up and wrote the wrong surname for Robert and his father Joseph or they were trying to hide something and changed their name to CUMMINGS? The marriage took place at The Church of St Philip in the Parish of Battersea after banns.

Does any one know who Robert is and why would he change his name? Are any other records I should look at?

thanks
Anne-Marie
