Yes I have looked on freeBMD but cannot find the marriage.

The 1881 census is his son and family from first marriage.

Joseph Medley c1807 Oldham first wife Betty on 1841 census, seen with wife Hannah nee Chambers on 1861 census etc.

On 1851 census mistranscribed as Hedley

From freeBMD it seems Betty died in 1842.

Sally seems to be the first child of the second "marriage" born Mar 1850.

The census Ann has given you is for Jacob not Joseph - did you mean Jacob?
Where did you get the name Hannah from.

David you are correct about Joseph marrying Betty Whitehead. She died in childbirth in 1842.

Joseph may have married Hannah Chambers in Oldham.

Thank you for finding them on the 1851 as Hedley too. I did not find that.

Ann thanks for finding Sally's birth for me I will send for the certificate.

There is no registration for an Alice Medley in 1838 and she would have to be born the same sort of time as Jacob who is registered.

The 1851 census you found is my Joseph and Hannah Medley. Joseph is my GGGrandfather.

I have found Joseph with his first wife Betty on the 1841 census.

Sally was the daughter of Joseph and Betty too.

I am now looking for Joseph and Hannah Medley with their family on the 1871 and 1881 census in Oldham.

Hannah was born in Underwood Nottingham 1813.

Joseph and Betty did have a daughter Sally 1833. She must have died.

Yes Joseph and Hannah also had a daughter Sally.

Thanks for finding the death for me I will check it out.

I think the Joseph Henry Medley was another branch of the Medleys.

For further information I have just been to look at the marriage certificate on microfilm.

July 19th 1863, St. Mary's, Prestwich
Joseph Medley, 56, widower, occupation spinner, father Job Medley labourer
married Hannah Chadderton, 50, widow, servant, father William Chambers, miner.
witnesses were Samuel Ramsden and John Horsefield

I am so pleased you found the marriage for me. I did not give it a thought that Hannah was a widow. Her married name being Chadderton and Maiden name Chambers.
