Find Ancestors

Would like some information about Isabella Aird or McLuskie. Her parents were either Bernard McLuskie (or McCluskey?) and Jane or Janet Aird or James McLuskie and Margaret Hamilton depending which document you look at. Think she originated from Ayrshire and know she married greatgrandfather James McNamee in Bathgate, West Lothian, which was were my Mum originated from before she married. James and Isabella married August 1867 had 7 children and then he died in Blackburn, West Lothian and Isabella remarried in 1886, they had a son William who emigrated to US and have found his descendants still living there.

To get back to Isabella, what is the best way of finding out about her parents. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Anne

You need to get the marriage certificate from ScotlandsPeople to find her parents names

Vera, where was John born?

If you look at her marriage certificates on Scotlandspeople, it should give you her age and the names of her parents including her mother's maiden surname. You can then look for her on census records with her parents.

You should compare the details that she has given on both marriage certificates and also her death certificate (although it is more likely that the informant may have been unsure of the correct details).

Sorry John McNamee was born in Crosshouse, Ayrshire July 1868, believe he died in 1872. They had 5 girls 3 born in Armadale and 2 in Harthill and then a son James born in Blackburn, West Lothian. When Isabella remarried in 1886 she was living in Armadale. Have got this fairly well documented but can not get back any further. Isabella died in 1899 again in Armadale and then from what I can find out William her son with 2nd husband, also a McNamee, but do not know if they were related, went to States and Charles (Isabella's second husband) is found in 1901 census living in a workingmens home in Bathgate, again West Lothian. Have been checking the 1851 census (Scotland) for Isabella....so far no luck.

married 17 August 1867 Bathgate, West Lothian
Registation Details 662.01 Page 24 Entry 48
James was bachelor aged 22 working Ironstone Miner living Armadale, West Lothian.
Bella was spinster aged 19, domestic servant living Harthill, West Lothian. Both Roman Catholics.
James's father was James McNamee (fish curer) and mother Catherine Quin. (I gather that James and Catherine came from Newtonstewart, County Tyrone and came over in 1840s with at least one or maybe two sons and then had James and further children before Catherine died c 1852 and then some of the children returning to N. Ireland)

Bella's parents were given as James McLuskie (miner) and Margaret (nee Hamilton, think?) Witness names not readable, Registrat David Rankine. Date registered 19 August 1967.

Charles McNamee and Isabella McNamee married 31 August 1886, Bathgate. Registrations District 662.01 Page 14 Entry 28.
Charles in bachelor aged 36 and coal miner.
Isabella is widow aged 41 (occupation not readable) Both living as Bathville Row, Armadale, West Lothian. Both Roman catholics.
From information I have gathered Charles also appears to originate from Newtonstewart, County Tyrone.
Charles' parents were William McNamee (deceased in 1886) linen weaver and Margaret (nee McInally) and Isabella's parents given as Bernard Mcluskie, deceased, general labourer and Janet McLuskie, also deceased, maiden name Aird or Laird. Witness not readable, I'm afraid.

I can't see them in 1841 or 1851 census - even allowing for Bernard maybe being Brian (sometimes the Irish use Brian as another name for Bernard), Jean being Jane or Janet Aird or McLuskie or indeed any of the children. It looks from the births of the children that they should be in Ayrshire in 1841. If Bernard was a shift worker, you would still expect to see some of the family but alas, they seem to be in hiding!

Anne you could look at the Catholic marriages on SP to see if you can find a marriage for Bernard and Jean as it may give their father's names and that would take you back another generation.

May not be Catholic as there is a story somewhere about being disowned for marrying a Catholic. My relations seem to go round in circles. Many thanks for your help Anne
