My 4th g.grandfather Peter anderson was b 1786 to Alexander anderson & Janet Mc Kenzie 1786 in Inverness but I can not find a marriage for them. They would only have been about 16 years old.Does anyone have them in their family? There was a Janet Mc Kenzie b in Oldhamstock, near Dunbar in 1770 who may be the right Janet but I can not verify her.

Thanks,Barbara,I think I may have sent 2 replies.but this date would be too late for Janet & Alexander as they were both deceased by then.I have been on Scotlands people with success for later Andersons but the early ones are very elusive.

Doreen Report 15 Jun 2009 09:31

Thanks Rootgatherer,
Yes,the early records are very patchy,I was basing my hopes for this one on the fact that the son Peter Anderson was married in Dunbar and later descendants moved from Inverness to South Leith,Midlothian.
I'll just keep hoping someone will have them in their family tree.

I would get Peter's baptismal record - does it refer to Janet as his wife? If so it probably was in Petty in the gap 12/84-1/92.

NB one can't tell the marital status from the IGI entry - the same IGI entry as Peter's (with suitable name and date changes) exists for my g gran, but the actual parish register reads:
Lonmay OPR 1854
25th November 1854
Elizabeth Johnston, illegitimate daughter of James
Johnston Farm Servant Adie, Cruden & Elizabeth Anderson
Crisekelly, was born 25th November 1853, & baptized by Mr.
Gibbon 4th January 1854 before witnessess viz: William
Anderson & Elizabeth Scott, Crisekelly
[Adie is probably a misrecording of Adnie, and the witnesses were Eliz J's grandparents]

It doesn't usually state how long they were married on Memorial inscriptions, but if they're buried in the same lair, it would probably refer to them as husband and wife.
I mention this as I saw a pic of Petty cemetery, and it looks like a nice well-kept place.

I would see if there's a cemetery index available - try:

Finally, Oldhamstocks ELN (near Dunbar), seems quite unlikely, especially as there's at least 2 local Janets around. Why did you think that?

Many thanks for all the information,I'll go through it all carefully and see if I can connect with any of it,and get back on to Scotland's people again.

Doreen Report 15 Jun 2009 14:36

My previous message was to mgnv, again thanks for all the information. Also many thanks,Rootgatherer, specially for the info about the tree on Ancestry.co.
I had discounted the Jannet Young as her family didn't seem to fit in with the children of Peter Anderson who from his marriage I have full records of,it's just the earlier ones I'm looking for.
It looks as though I will have to subscribe to Ancestry.co to getin touch with the Gould/McKenzie tree.
In the Family search there is the birth of Peter with Janet McKenzie dexcribed as spouse to Alexanderanderson but I can find no record of marriage or any other children to the couple.
Thanks again for all the info from you all,and I'll get started again.

I agree with what rootgather says about familysearch and scotlandspeople but with this reservation - I have found at least two parishes for Scotland on family search where only girls' baptisms come up!

Re SP and the IGI - I'ld agree with rootg's 1st bit, but my impression was that the IGI's coverage was only about 80%. I've come across a few submitted entries where there's no OPR extract, but it's turned out there is an actual OPR entry on SP. I've not yet come across a girls only batch in SCT, although I've come across some in ENG, with C-P batch #s too - one knows the J-K batches are sexed.

My ggg grandad William Anderson b 1797 Banffshire is an example where there's only a submitted entry on the IGI, but there's an OPR entry on SP.

Thanks Mgnv,
You've gone to a lot of trouble,I have most of these records but a couple I didn't have.
I have Peter Anderson's family from when he married Christian Purdie but it's his parents who are the problem,as Alexander was only 16 when his son was born there is the possibilty they never married or married other people.Sometimes you never find anything and reconcile yourself it's as far as you can go.
Thanks again.

The tree has Janet a=81 d 1851 in Elgin. There is one on 30/3/1851, viz Thomas Christie's aunt, but she's unwed and pob=Elgin, so I wonder abt that
Surname First name(s) Rel Status Sex Age Occupation Where Born Census Place
ANDERSON Janet Aunt U F 81 Morayshire - Elgin Elgin Burgh

She was on the same street in 1841:

For completeness, I ought to report I also found:

HARDIE Margaret F 13 Morayshire
HARDIE James M 10 Morayshire
SMITH Robert M 10 Male Servant Morayshire
MCKENZIE Janet F 71 Outside Census County (1841)

It's not really clear to me why she'ld be in Elgin. I would think it's definitely worth contacting the tree owner, but before I forked over a month's sub, I'ld try the local library and the local LDS FHC. You can find the latter in the centre col of:
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.asp

Another alternative is to ask someone to forward a message for you - this should be handled by pm's. Either way, the message ought to have your real email addy so you can continue contact (and receive attachments).
