Keelan Report 26 Feb 2009 00:12

I posted a topic a few days ago about John Mckenzie, and im just wondering if there is any information anyone might be able to give me concerning the Mckenzie family in general.

My dads name is James Mckenzie, born 11/12/1956.He has 3 brothers and 1 sister.

My granddads name was John Mckenzie, born 07/04/1905. He had 5 brothers and 5 sisters. He was born in Campbeltown. Argyll. My grandmother is Helen Mckenzie nee McCormack, she was born 23/03/1926.

My great granddads name was John Mckenzie, born 12/03/1883 in Campbeltown, Argyll. He had 3 sisters and 2 brothers. His wife was Mary Mckenzie nee Cook, born 25/02/1885.

My great great granddads name was also John Mckenzie, born c.1853 on Coll Isle, Scotland. i dont know how many brothers and sisters he had. He married Robertina Mckenzie nee Mustarde, born c.1851.

I belive my great great great granddads name was also John Mckenzie, and that he married Annabella Mckenzie, nee ?

I am really interested to find out my great great granddads siblings, date of birth, also his parents names (possibly John and Annabella). Also if i could go back further into the Mckenzie line, that would be brilliant. but i dont know where to look, and im pretty new at researching my family history. Any help anyone could give would be a great help.

Many thanks,

Keelan

Just so that no one reinvents the wheel.

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards.asp?wci=thread&tk=1129449

Keelan, really, it would have made sense to continue the existing thread, since this is all about the same family.

You have taken note when it was pointed out to you earlier that you were posting multiple threads?

EvieBeavie

EvieBeavie Report 26 Feb 2009 00:58

Keelan, I'm curious.

In the last month, you have had 11 threads asking about various branches of your family.

I think you've realized by now that no one reading your posts actually has information about your families -- everybody is researching them using the resources available.

Aren't you curious about what those resources are, and how to access them, and aren't you at all interested in learning how to research your own family, and doing that research?

Malron McKenzie 10 >>>>>>>Barra, Inverness
Betsy McKenzie 8 >>>>>>>>Joberman, Argyll

That doesnt seem to fit in, or is it just me?

And Bessie McKenzie, a domestic servant. would that be her occupation or her role in the house of John and Annabella Mckenzie.

I dont get why on cencus' that on some, names are there (john, allan and macolm for instance) and then in the next cencus they arent.

I know i should have posted this on the same thread. Didnt think that until after.

"I dont get why on cencus' that on some, names are there (john, allan and macolm for instance) and then in the next cencus they arent."

Well rather obviously, Keelan, they were adults and they have gone and established their own households. (Or they might have died.)

Is this a lead-in to wanting someone to track them all down through the next censuses to?

Keelan

Keelan Report 26 Feb 2009 01:07

Yes i am interested in researching my own family.
I only got the Gold Membership on this site 3 or 4 days ago, i havent got and cant get any subscriptions on other sites like Ancestry.co.uk for a little while.

Im not 100% sure how to use all of the facilities on this site myself yet, and i've not long started researching my family. Eventually i'll be able to do it myself. But people have been really helpful, and have given me lots of information.

EvieBeavie

EvieBeavie Report 26 Feb 2009 01:11

Basically, Keelan, people have constructed your entire family tree for you.

At a certain point the census information will be exhausted. You might want to investigate www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk if you want to go back farther than that.

Keelan

Keelan Report 26 Feb 2009 01:21

They've helped me a great deal yes, but not constructed me entire family tree thankyou. I dont think you needed to be as patronising and blunt with me as you were. There are nicer ways of giving advice.

EvieBeavie

EvieBeavie Report 26 Feb 2009 01:41

I'm sorry, Keelan, but you have never asked for advice. You have posted thread after thread, moving through each branch of your family, and asking people to do research for you, but never asked for advice about how to do it.

Now, granted, I do think that helpers here should volunteer that advice more often -- not just post census and BMD info, but say where it came from and how it was found.

I'm not familiar with the resources available at this site, since I (and everyone who has been helping you) use Ancestry, but I can't see much point in spending that money and then saying "I don't know where to look". There's a point at which one really isn't "new at researching my family history", and I think we're there.

I am more than eager to help people with family history research. I simply wonder why anyone would come here and get it all done for them.

Keelan

Keelan Report 26 Feb 2009 02:06

I was speaking about the way in which you seemed to be giving me advice. Rather than giving me advice, like you think people should do more of; you seem to be telling me everything that i am doing wrong.

I am new at researching my family history on the computer. Most of what i have found before i came onto the computer was by talking to relatives and asking for information and help to get me started. .

Yes i posted thread after thread, sometimes accidentally posting more than one on the same family eg the McCormack/McCormick family. I didnt mean to post that 3 times. Honest mistake. At the beginning of my posts i asked for any information or help (advice).

I didnt come on here to get it all done for me. And i didnt ask people to give me all the information that they did, you'll notice with many that they kept posting replies before i'd had the chance to reply to them.

I think you could have gone about this a different way, or at least messaged me so that this wasn't a public debate!

I am very grateful for the information people have given to me and the sites and links. If anyone thinks i have taken advantage of them, i didnt mean to. Ignorance on my part.

HI Keelan

The best way forward if you you to out al the info you have so far into your tree in GR. The system will then automatically look for "Hot" matches in other members trees and give you the opportunity to contact them and you can share info that way. When you get stuck then come back with specifc questions.

I would recommend getting a subscription to ancestry, you can in fact get a free 2 week trial.

I build my tree on ancestry as it is easy to pull data down from the census records etc without having to type it all in. From time to time I then download the tree as a GEDCOM file and import it into GR so it can look for matches with my updated info.

I know it's all a bit mind boggling to start off with, but you'll get the hang of it soon.
Good luck.

Keelan Report 26 Feb 2009 12:54

Hi Victoria,
Thanks for the advice, i'll definately use it and go have a look on Ancestry.co.uk. It seems that that's where everyone is able to get their information, so i'll do that and subscribe to it. Which subscription would you recommend, as i've seen that there are three?

Yeah, it can get a little mind boggling at times, but hopefully, eventually i'll get the hang of it!

Thanks very much,
Keelan
