Are these: Mcewan McHugh McKeown, McCue
all variations of her surname? If so, which is the most likely, and what censuses, if any, have you found her on?
Thanks

Scottish births records start 1855 so you would need the parish records on Scotlands People, If she married in 1869 would she have been born 1856 ie aged 13 on marriage?

mary-ann Report 13 Feb 2011 08:22

Have not found her on any census
Richard French born Derry Ireland
children born
Richard 1867 Dundee
John 1869 Scotland
William 1871 Belfast
Elizabeth 1873 Derry
Benjamin 1874 Belfast
the rest of the family was born Australia - left London 1874 on the Indus with the four boys and left Elizabeth in Ireland

I would think Mcewan as that is what appears on her marriage but McHugh appears on shipping record.

Records indicate Scotish birth but family says she had irish acccent.

to shirley - I would not think so but her daughter Mary Jane was only 15 when married in Australia

K Report 13 Feb 2011 08:30

Presumably the parents names come from her marriage. Have you found their marriage on Scotlands People?

mary-ann Report 13 Feb 2011 09:21

yes I have a copy of the orginal but Mary jane signed with a mark so who knows what was transcribed and both were declared deceased at the time of the marriage. Her age was given as 24 but 7 years later on the shipping record it was given as 38 and then birth of first child in australia was given as 21 in 1876 so she either had no idea or had such a thick accent she could not be understood.
Thank you for your ideas i do appreciate all ideas.

Hi Mary-Ann
Yes after a long time as initially he was down as born in 1830 and we searched high and low with that info and eventually we found him as born in 1812 still unsure of correct age but we had the constant thread of my Grandmother whose age was correct on evcerything we found out.We also founf my Great Grandmother and her family once we found the 1812 date of birth.Don't give up things that appear to mean very little lead on to more discoveries
Best of luck

thank you - the problem seems to come because they themselves could not read and write so relied on others to spell it. My father was named as his second name Dixon but the family name was Dickson on his fathers side - they were scotish but my grandmother filled in the form and so as she was irish she spelt it Dixon like the irish do....
