I am trying to trace the ancestors and immediate family of Catherine McDonald who was one of the 6 children of Peter McDonald (c1802) and Mary McDermott (c1800). She is understood to have been born around 1830 at Dunegan in Scotland and was married on 2 Jan 1949 to William McRae with whom she had a son John born 11 Dec 1849. It is believed Willaim died in a tragic accident in April 1852 following which she migrated to Australia in September 1852 with her young son aboard the 'Marco Polo' to join her father and other siblings. On the voyage she met a young Norwegian crew member Hans Christian Reiersen who remained in Australia on arrival and anglicised his name to Henry Christopher Raleigh. The were married on 29 April 1854 and had many children.
It is believed that Catherine's grandfather was Christopher McDonald who was married to Mary McDonald but no additional information is known.
Catherine's mother is generally recorded as Mary McDermott but may have been Sarah or Marion. Although most records indicate her surname as 'McDermott', the marriage sertificate of Catherine to Henry Raleigh suggests it could have been 'McDairmid' or 'McDiarmid'.
