On the original Nathan and Harriet had been married 9 years with no children. So is Alice Amy 13 the daughter of Nathan by a previous marriage.

You'll need to track Nathan back a few censuses to find his siblings then you can start to track them to find May's parents.

Or if the nieces are actually Smiths!!

Yes. Just looked at original 1911 census and both May and Harriet are both Smith!!

Harriet Sarah Annie and May Edith Elizabeth are both listed in the original return as SMITH rather than SIMPSON.

Nathan's wife Harriet was originally Harriet SMITH (check marriages 9 years previously)

and there is a birth

Presumably May is actually Harriet's niece rather than Nathan's.

Thank you Leah I thought I was going mad. I put on my original post with the 1911that May was Smith but when I went back to check I looked at the transcript and saw that it said Simpson and thought that I had got it wrong and edited my comments out. How did the transcriber get it so wrong?
