I am looking for any information on my g-grandmother Mary Ellen Jones. She was born in Chester in about 1883 and married my g-grandfather John Baines in 1909. I think Mary Ellens father was Willam Jones. With such common names I am getting nowhere!

If you buy her marriage cert it will give you her Dads name & occupation

You need the marriage cert to find her father's name and occupation really.

1911 - note different surname spelling:
BAINS MARY ELLEN F 1883 28 Chester Cheshire
BAINS JOHN ROBERT M 1885 26 Chester Cheshire

A shame all this info was not given to help save time searching for things.

Marriage looks good and birth too. Thankyou

How likely is the 1991 census to be right. I suppose it is very difficult to tell given the common names. Names for siblings of mary ellen that have been mentioned by family are sissy, ellen and clifford although not sure on accuracy of these

Only you can tell if its them as you still havent said what her fathers name and occupation is from the marriage cert ,although on your other thread you say you sent for it in August I think it was.
And that is the crucial piece of info that has not been given on either thread.

Or have I missed it somewhere?

Re-ordered the certificate as first did not arrive. Second arrived this morning. Confirms fathers name as William Jones, a labourer. Gives address of Mary Ellen as 52 Railway Terrace. Witnesses names of Joseph Dodd & Mary McLear which both mean nothing to me. Not sure if this is helpful as William is as uncommon as Mary! Hoping someone can suggest what to do next.

JONES Mary Ellen Chester 8a 444

You can try sending for this and use fathers name of William as a checking ref.
