I am looking for details of Nathaniel Mardall a wheelwright born 1812/died 1886. Nathaniel was born in Biggleswade, Bedordshire but lived his adult life in Whitechapel, London. I know he married twice and had 15 children but I do not know details of his parents/brothers and sisters. Can anyone help? Also anyone related to Nathaniel I would love to hear from.

Hi Carole,

I am fairly new to this but am researching the Mitchell family.

My grandfather - John Mitchell - was apprenticed to Mardall Bros in 1888. I have the original apprenticeship documents. At that time Mardall Bros were at 86 Back Church Lane in Whitechapel although the apprenticeship book shows they later moved to Ben Johnson Road. Kellys 1884 shows Nathaniel Mardell at 86 Back Church lane so it looks as though this is your ancestor.

John Mitchell had an elder Brother Thomas who is shown on census documents as a coachmakers labourer but I have, at this time, no specific information as to who he worked for.

I was wondering if you had any information about the business of Mardall Bros? Family legend has it that John Mitchell worked at some point on the coaches used on state occassions but I have no specific information as to when this might have been although as he later shows himself as a sign writer I am guessing this was earlier in his working life than later.

Regards

Ian Mitchell
