Hi
Any help very gratefully received
I am very new to researching my family tree - and am not sure if I have taken an incorrect branch with my research.
Here's what I have so far ... many apologies for the long list ;-)
John Philpot Beauchamp (b. Essex 1907-1980) - Grandfather Frances Mary Gransby (b. Barnet/Arkley 1909-1991) - Grandmother Arthur David Gransby (b. Arkley 1872-1959) - Gt Grandfather Annie Attwood (b. Needingworth 1880) - Gt Grandmother George Gransby (b. Barnet 1844-1901) - Gt x2 Grandfather Mary Ann LUCK (b. Barnet 1845) - Gt x2 Grandmother William LUCK (b. North Mimms 1811) - Gt x3 Grandfather Mary Kirby (b. Barnet 1812-1901) - Gt x3 Grandmother Thomas LUCK (b. Great Munden 1783-1873) - Gt x4 Grandfather Sarah Osborne (b. Great Munden 1780-1838) - Gt x4 Grandmother William LUCK (b. Great Munden 1740) - Gt x5 Grandfather Mary Stiles (b. Hertford 1747) - Gt x5 Grandmother
From here on, this is where I think I may have gone wrong:
Thomas LUCK (b. Shoreditch or Great Munden ? 1704-1765) - Gt x6 Grandfather Jane Newman (b. Braughing 1719) - Gt x6 Grandmother
I have found Thomas Luck (1704) as being Born/Baptised in St Leonard Shoreditch, London - on the Baptism record it states that he is Thomas of ?(father unknown) and Ellin Luck (but can't find any other information) but then on other records it states him as being born in Great Munden ... which led me to:
Thomas LUCK (b. Great Munden 1675-1756) - Gt x7 Grandfather Susan Hutchings (b. Ardeley, Herts 1679) - Gt x7 Grandmother Thomas LUCKE (b. Hertfordshire 1641) - Gt x8 Grandfather Mary Lawrence (b. Great Munden 1641) - Gt x8 Grandmother
Once again ... apologies for the long list ... but it would be fantastic to know if I am on the right lines.
Many thanks in anticipation of any assistance Kindest regards, Michelle

If he is Thomas Luck, 1704, son of an unknown father and Ellin Luck, then surely he is the illegitimate son of Ellin Luck, so where does Thomas Luck, 1675 come in? If you have conflicting evidence - Shoreditch and Great Munden, do not just pick the most convenient one. What value are the other records - is it just someone else making guesses?

Hi Patchem
Yes, I thought that maybe Thomas Luck (1704) was the illegitimate son of Ellin Luck.
Thomas Luck (1675) I had down as the father of Thomas Luck (1704) - but thinking that through logically that wouldn't really make too much sense
The information from Thomas Luck (1675) / Susan Hutchings (1679) and Thomas Lucke (1641) / Mary Lawrence (1651) was from a fellow researcher.
I'm wondering if maybe I have picked up the wrong Thomas Luck on the Baptism records so I probably need to clarify more details on him first regarding his actual Birth and Location before I can accept the details regarding the earlier Thomas Luck (1675)
As these dates are very early I think that it's going to be quite a challenge - any advice on the best place to start?
Kind regards, Michelle

So looking at this I am probably correct with the William Luck (1740) / Mary Stiles (1747) connection.
From your last post William Luck (1740) - for Mother's Name - would Jennet have been her First Name or Last Name?
If it is her last name then we have found the possible area where I need to back track to
Regards, Michelle

I have a Jennet in my tree so it would be her first name.
I can't find a marriage for a Jennet though to a Thomas Luck.

So, if her first name was Jennet - I don't think that would be an alternative name for Jane (Newman). Do you?
Which probably means that this is the point where my research has gone astray.

You can't really say that as don't forget not a lot of people in these years could read or write and would'nt know if they had been mistranscribed or just spelt wrong by whoever wrote the things down.
People in these years also did'nt travel very far from where they were born.
I have to go out soon but will have a look later when I return to see if you have got any further.

Okey dokey ... so I've started to go back ... I now have confirmation of:
Mary Ann Luck (1845) - confirmed on her birth certificate was her father; William Luck and mother; Mary Kirby Mary Ann Luck (1845) - confirmed on her marriage certificate (21 May 1866) spouse; George Gransby
William Luck (1811) - I have him on 1841, 1851, 1861 census forms with children - on all of them he has stated his birth place as either North Mimms or Hertfordshire living in and around the Barnet / Arkley area.
I have William Luck (1811) marriage details confirmed on a search as being 18 March 1833, Chipping Barnet, Hertfordshire to Mary Kirby
I then did a search for Willam Luck (1811) birth using that data and the nearest I have found is: William Luck christened 07 October 1810, North Mimms, Hertfordshire with father named as William Luck and mother as Sarah
I then searched for a marriage between a William Luck and a Sarah in the North Mimms, Hertfordshire area and found a William Luck married to a Sarah Sames on 26 December 1806.
I haven't been able to find any other details on this William Luck or Sarah Sames to verify birth years / locations / parents etc
I'm still looking ... determined to get to the bottom of this.
