Trying to find any info of Emma Loveday, father Charles from Pritterwell/Southend area,
|
From the place names you have, this Emma is the best candidate to be found:
Name: Emma Loveday Year of Registration: 1886 Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar District: Rochford County: Essex Volume: 4a Page: 441
making her younger than she stated at marriage, but if she was in an orphanage her age may have been overstated at some time.
However, that one looks like this one in 1891, whose father isn't Charles:
Name: Emma Loveday Age: 5 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1886 Relation: Daughter Father's Name: Elias Mother's Name: Mary A Gender: Female Where born: Prittlewell, Essex, England Civil Parish: Prittlewell Ecclesiastical parish: St Mary Town: Prittlewell County/Island: Essex Registration district: Rochford Sub-registration district: Prittlewell ED, institution, or vessel: 10
Household Members: Name Age Charles Loveday 7 Elias Loveday 34 -- head / father Eliza Loveday 1 Emma Loveday 5 George Loveday 2 George Loveday 40 -- brother of Elias Louisa Loveday 10 Mary A Loveday 25 -- wife / mother
Mary A's age says 35, not 25, i.e. born abt 1856. Elias was a brickmaker's carman, and this would be his death:
Name: Elias Loveday Estimated Birth Year: abt 1849 Year of Registration: 1918 Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep Age at Death: 69 District: Rochford County: Essex Volume: 4a Page: 606
But ... Mary Ann died in 1892:
Name: Mary Ann Loveday Estimated Birth Year: abt 1857 Year of Registration: 1892 Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun Age at Death: 35 District: Rochford County: Essex Volume: 4a Page: 242
so that would be a reason for her children to end up in an orphanage -- the widowed father left with five kids under 12.
That Emma did have a brother named Charles, and she may not have known her father's name, so Charles went on the marriage certificate.
I think this is likely the family -- do you have the names of your Emma's siblings who were also placed in the orphanage? -- and the explanation for Emma's placement in the orphanage. How unfortunate that it seems there was no contact between the children and father after that.
PS -- Hilda -- you know there is someone at GR with Emma Loveday born 1883 Southend in his tree? Could be a known family member of yours ... could be you, for all I know ... people go by so many different names. ;)

Uh oh. I think I just killed my theory.
Elias got himself remarried pretty promptly. This is his household in 1901:
Name Age Mennie Carter 5 months Charles Loveday 19 Elias Loveday 50 Eliza Loveday 12 Elizabeth Loveday 13 Florence Loveday 3 George Loveday 15 George Loveday 56 Martha Loveday 51
Name: Elias Loveday Year of Registration: 1893 Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec District: Rochford County: Essex Volume: 4a Page: 716
Two possible wives, how annoying: Lilian Martha Boulton or Martha Keepence.
Back to the drawing board?
I'm thinking you might not know the person here at GR who has Emma in his tree, since the place of birth, Southend, seems to come from the 1901 census ...

Thank you both so much for all your help, this is what I have found out: Emma Loveday, Father Charles Loveday who was a carman,A witness of her marriage, to Arthur Henry Crane was George Loveday Arthur was a widower, living at Gainsborough Drive Prittlewell, I believe he had a son Bert by his 1st marriage. My mother-in-law Beatrice Maud Crane ,Emma and Arthur's daughter, with her sister Florrie and her Brother Harry were put into the orphanage when Emma left Arthur. Arthur later married again. Mother-in-law thought Emma died in Gravesend. Once again thank you I will continue to search to unravel this story. Regards Hilda
