Jeremiah Ling was born in Jan. 1820, I first thought John and Jeremiah were twins but they weren't. John was born in 1817 apparently.

Please read the thread that is stickied at the top of this page, from Genes, on how to use this board. It states that there are 'volunteer researchers'. That means they are human beings, not automated machines, and as such, deserve some manners, such as please and thank you. This applies to both threads you have on this board.

Ages on the 1841 were rounded down so anyone aged between 24 and 20 would show as 20 years old.

So this means you HAVE seen the 1841 census.

Which other censuses have you seen? Just so we don't duplicate.

Thanks, Ozibird, I have seen the 1841 census. I'm not sure about the Occupation weaver though, on his death certificate it has Decorator, although I have seen, Guilder, Carver, also "Gentleman".

Ozibird, Not sure now whether I have been through all the Census after 1841, I know Jeremiah was in Australia in Sept. 1885.
Thanks, Beverley

OK, I'll have a look for 1851-1881.

As for 1841 occupation, both he and his brother John have ditto occupation as mother, Elizabeth. Hers is 'M'. I wondered if it was 'W' as it is very similar to the 'W' in Weaver that is also on that page.

According to FreeCEN, "Instructions to Enumerators" for the 1841 Census required the use of standard abbreviations for Occupations.

and also:
"M." is supposed to be Manufacturer and "m." is supposed to be Maker. Enumerator's often used them interchangeably and it is sometimes an abbreviation for Miner.

There wasn't a 'W' for weaver. So it looks like they could be Manufacturers of something. Unfortunately she is an Annuitant in 1851.

No luck with Jeremiah at all. Have you found him entering Australia?

He may have emigrated somewhere else first then travelled to Australia.

Thank you Ozibird, I appreciate very much the information you have found. I was told as a child there was a big "Estate" or an "Estate" which was wound up at some stage, I don't know what year - one of my Great Grandmother's brother's went to England (Norwich?) to see about it.

Ozibird,

Jeremiah Ling married in Melbourne, Australia, in September, 1855. I could not find him coming into Melbourne by ship in 1851 or 1852. I am getting a relation to check coming into Sydney Australia in those years for me.

I am related to this same family; and there was a bit of excitement when Elizabeth's father John died, leaving significant estate. NB the Colman mentioned in here is a member of the Colman's Mustard family; the families were connected by marriage.
