Trying t find descendents of Doris May Ruth Latham born 1910 in Stratford West Ham (Essex as it was then). Parents were Joseph Latham and Ruth Stock. Don't know if she married.
Many thanks

Have you searched for a marriage?

Since it would be after 1911 you should search for her as

Doris M R Latham

http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

Then you can search for births of children.

Say she married Smith -- search for births, surname Smith, mother's surname Latham.

As her children, if any, would have been born 1930 or later, their birth info shouldn't be posted here since they may well be living, so best you try searching for the info first.

Possible but you would need to check cert for her age and fathers name

You'll find her marriage in 1943 instantly -- husband has a very distinctive surname.

Unfortunately there were no children to that marriage (I also checked at Ancestry for later births).

However there is no death for the name Doris Wertheimer, so she may have remarried ... or is still living (or died after 2005)!

I don't see a remarriage, either.

I wonder whether there was a name change, in view of the times and events?

Siblings? Are we not looking for descendants of Doris ................... ?

Phyllis, you don't have Doris in your family tree at this website.

One person does have her in their tree.

Alan Report 1 Mar 2011 21:35

sorry didnt read the posting properly,
still, if you didnt have her siblings, here they are.

Phyll Report 1 Mar 2011 21:54

Thank you all so very, very much. It is all usefull stuff, even the siblings. I will certainly be investigating further.
Now may I ask one more thing: looking for Doris's fathers death if anyone can see him anywhere. There are so many bloomin Lathams it's as bad as Smith or Jones. I have obtained a certificate for a death for Joseph but am not convinced it is the correct one. The registration person doesn;t link up.
Once again thanks yo all you wonderful people.

Would need to know when Joseph was born.

His age would be on his marriage cert.

JaneyCanuck Report 1 Mar 2011 23:36

Hi Phyllis, as Mike says, you should really start by getting the marriage certificate for Doris's parents. That will give you Joseph's age (and father's name).

If you let us know how you're related to Doris it can also help, since then we don't spend time finding things you know, for instance.

The 1911 census can be searched here:

http://www.1911census.co.uk/search/tnaform.aspx

On a free search for Joseph Latham living in West Ham with Doris Latham:

LATHAM JOSEPH 1884 27 West Ham Essex

And then I find the rest of the household by searching for any Latham living in West Ham with Joseph and Doris ... and it's just her mother:

LATHAM RUTH 1886 25 West Ham Essex

So we know he was born in 1883 or 1884, if that age is accurate. But I don't subscribe, so I don't see his birthplace.

It would help if you would tell us *what* certificate you've obtained for a Joseph's death. When and where was it, how old was he at death, who signed the death certificate ...

(Alan, watch out for the cedar 2x4. ;) I was just hoping to head off one of those torrents of posts, not necessarily from you at all, of every remotely conceivably record that might be found until we knew more about what was already known!)

Hi
To those of you who were helping with this family yesterday a very sincere apology for not giving enough info. Was late and I was tired.

Grateful to Allan as I did not know about other siblings of Doris.

Regarding Her father Joseph Latham, he was born in West Ham, Essex in Apr-Jun 1883. We kniow he was at 34 Chichester Road, Leytonstone in 1920 from his father's death cert. We also know he died after 1936 as he was at a wedding that year unless he died shortly after the wedding.

The 'wrong' certificate has a son as registering the death who I found belonged to another Joseph Latham born abt. the same time.
So if anyone can find my Joseph's death I would be very grateful. Many thanks to you all for taking the trouble. I know I'm a ******nuisance.

Without knowing which was "the wrong certificate"....

There's this one ...

Mike
That was the wrong one. Thanks

You're probably stck with a little trial and error if there are multiple possible matches -- but this one looks about perfect:

Name: Joseph Latham
Death Registration Month/Year: 1959
Age at death (estimated): 76
Registration district: Chelmsford
Inferred County: Essex
Volume: 4a
Page: 443

It was in the last quarter of the year, and your Joseph would have turned 76 earlier that year.

Hi Phyllis, got your PM, thanks -- it's fine just to reply in the thread, easier for both of us -- and it does let others know you replied. ;) ... Oops, you did say you tried to post but it didn't show up. I had some problems posting last night too ...

So just for the record, Phyllis is going to try that certificate!

Just to add, about the original question about Doris.

If you got her exact date of birth from her birth certificate, the deaths index can be searched at Ancestry by given names + date of birth, after 1969, with no surname. If her death was registered in a different surname, it might be possible to identify it at least tentatively.

Two Doris May Rs whose birth might have been registered in June quarter 1910 died after 1969. The first is accounted for by a marriage of a Bayley to a Skinner. The second I can't find a marriage to account for:

Name: Doris May R Russel
Birth Date: 1 May 1910
Death Registration Month/Year: Jul 1993
Age at death (estimated): 83
Registration district: Havering
Inferred County: Essex
Register number: HC68
District and Subdistrict: 2341C
Entry Number: 13

It's the right place, right given names and right birth quarter. (There's no image available, but I did try searching for marriages of Doris to Russ* just in case the name is mistranscribed, but there's no match I can see.)

It isn't unusual for the death of a woman who has had a long-term partnership and been publicly known by her partner's surname to be registered in that surname. That could be the case for your Doris. A change of surname is also a possibility.

There are no other Russel deaths in Havering, and very few in Essex. I haven't managed to come up with a possible partner.

Phyll Report 3 Mar 2011 21:06

Bless you Janey, It is all so confusing but I will certainly look into Doris further and try and get her certificate of birth as well.

Many thanks
