Jessie Langley born 6 March 1895 Newmarket

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

Paul Report 27 Jan 2011 16:10

Cannot trace what happened to her after 1916. In Sept 1916 she had an illegitimate daughter Daphne Langley (Jul-Sep Kensington) who was later adopted within the family. Have not been able to find any record of a marriage or death for her. It is not thought she had any further children.

Jessie Langley was born in Newmarket, Cambridgeshire on 6th March 1895 to Samuel Langley/Margaret Arnold. We have traced what happened to all her brothers and sisters including her twin sister Dorothy (Dolly).

Any information gratefully received!

That looks good - I assume I need to pay for a death cert to get any further detail?

Astra

Astra Report 27 Jan 2011 16:46

I'm afraid so and there is always the chance that it's not her of course but if you really want to find her then I am afraid it is the only way

The order for the death certificate of Jessie Langley is on its way.

I could also do with finding a death or marriage for a sister of Jessies:

Elsie Margaret Langley born Jan-Mar 1889 Newmarket

she may have died young

Couple of possible marriages ?? A bit later than I would have expected though.

Ignore above. I suppose you have the 1911 census for Elsie - aged 22 servant in Islington, London ? Can't see any obvious marriages though.

Astra Report 29 Jan 2011 07:11

Just in case you don't have it. Her parents state in 1911 that they have 7 children all still living.

The 1930 marriage in Newmarket could be a possibility - it was not thought she had any children and this late marriage could fit.

The death certificate for Jessie Langley aged 65 in 1960 has arrived.

It states names as:
Jessie HOLLINGS otherwise LANGLEY
Occupation as:
of 10 Culmstock Road, Battersea. Retired Domestic Servant,. Spinster.

Am I correct in saying that she might have married a Mr Hollings?
Can anyone find such a marriage?

Paul

Paul Report 3 Feb 2011 16:13

I am now assuming that HOLLINGS was the surname she used throughout her life, even though she did not marry.

Interestingly the Jessie Langley I am looking for was born in 1895 and had an illegitimate daughter in 1916, which she gave up for adoption - I do not know at what age. Maybe Hollings was the father's surname.

Astra Report 3 Feb 2011 16:32

Who was the informant on the death certificate? Was it a family member?

Paul

Paul Report 3 Feb 2011 16:38

The informant was E.J. Chivers of the same address. Not a great deal of help!

Paul Report 17 Feb 2011 20:19

I have come across a WW1 burial record at Ailly-sur-Somme Communal Cemetery

Pte. E. HOLLINGS. 2nd Bn. Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regt.) Died 16th Dec. 1916

It is possible that Private Hollings was the father of her child. He died before they could marry and she called herself Hollings the rest of her life.

Can anyone get any further details on this Private Hollings or indeed if any other Hollings died in WW1 from 1916.

Paul

Paul Report 19 Feb 2011 09:41

The E in Pte E Hollings stands for Edward.

If he had no middle names then there is only one Edward Hollings on FREEBMD that fits the timeframe

Births Sep 1888
HOLLINGS Edward Bradford, 9b 219

Any online military records give his age as unknown at date of death.

A letter has come to light which would seem to indicate that Jessie Langley had married a Williamson and died sometime in the period 1971-1978

Can anybody find a Langley/Williamson marriage or a death of a Jessie Langley/Williamson born 1895?

tempest

tempest Report 13 Mar 2011 15:50

a possibility although the date of birth is two days out

I can't find a death for a Jessie Williamson with the right dob but wonder if she may have married again? There are a few deaths with dob 6th March 1895 but this one is right in the middle of the time frame of 1971 -1978:

Name: Jessie Hart
Birth Date: 6 Mar 1895
Death Registration Month/Year: 1974
Registration district: Greenwich
Inferred County: Greater London

Mary

Edit: No, can't find a marriage for Jessie Langley or Williamson to a Hart, so ignore the above death.
