I am trying to find the parents of Denis Kearney. Denis was born 1853 Wifor Lancs. He was a Royal Marine. I have his marriage cert and he married Rosina Bartlett 1878 East Stonehouse, Plymouth. According to his marriage cert his father was John Kearney occupation Collier. I am looking for census records. The only one I can find is of Denis and Rosina in 1881. Hoping to find one with him and his parents

No sign of a birth on freebmd, but Kearney is an Irish name, maybe he lied for some reason?

mac

mac Report 17 Dec 2010 14:32

Checking the 1851 census on FMP there is a Mary Carney (1833), hawker from Ireland or a Mary Carney, patient at hospital both at Lancaster. Not sure why but neither image will open on GR. Just trying to establish if the family were in Lancaster before his birth.

There is a birth on Freebmd for Dennis Carney Q4/1854 registered in Manchester, don't know if this could have any connection, but nothing else coming up. (quite often find place of birth is stated as Lancaster, but they mean Lancashire)

Have you found him on a later census to cross-check the details?

No only on the 1881. I think Dennis died 1893 Plymouth

mac

mac Report 17 Dec 2010 15:06

I think that Dennis was an infant - the age is recorded as 0, but I can't find a corresponding birth registration.

Sorry, looked again - the birth was registered as Denis Q1/1993 in Plymouth

The family is in Chorley on the 1861 census as well, but still no sign of Dennis, just children James, Mary ann and a daughter I can't read the name of. You'll find them as Carney.

Not much luck tracing Dennis, what other information do you have on Rose/Rosina -she states born Devon on the 1881 census, but no trace of a birth - but there are 2 in Bristol. Who is her father, and where is she from on the marriage certificate?

Jeanette

Jeanette Report 18 Dec 2010 16:56

Rosina was a widow when she married Denis. She was Born Rosina Knight 1855 Padstow Cornwall daughter of Edward Knight and Eliza Brown
I found a 1901 census with Rose Woods born Padstow with daughter Annie Kearney living in Plymouth but the dates for Rosina's birth dont tie up

mac Report 18 Dec 2010 17:54

Rose Woods? - ok, get where you're coming from, Rose Kearney married Matthew Woods Q2/1898 registered at Stoke Damerel, Devon.

The fact she had already been a widow before marrying Dennis may have helped in the first place, and knowing she had re-married again may have pointed to a death for Dennis rather than trying to find him on a census to get more information on him.

She only had 1 daughter with her on the 1901 census, so checking freebmd the other possible daughter Rose died Q3/1890 aged 5 (reg Plymouth), don't put too much reliance on the ages on census returns, they can be wldly out, but the Annie's birth I found was 1888 does match.

The only death I can find for Denis Kearney is reg Plymouth 1893, he is 39 - right sort of age. But I can't find any of them in 1891.

I think you need to check out the military record posted earlier, he appears to be the only Denis Kearney in the vicinity - and the census returns only record what they have been informed at the time.

Well spotted Christine - still couldn't find this on GR, they've got it transcribed as Hearney.
.
On the original it could be Kearney, Denis is a labourer born Sligo, Ireland. The third person transcribed as Gloria is a male down as son - the name looks like George, aged 10, born Queenstown, Ireland.

Could this be Dennis on the 1871 census?

I have been following up some of the info above that several of you have given me. I now have Denis Kearneys military Records and now know he was born 1853 Ballymote, Sligo Ireland. I am trying to find his baptism. Ive looked at the census mentioned above but I am not sure if this is the correct one. Denis's date of Enlistment was 1875 Manchester. His occupation before enlistment was brickmaker. Ive looked on Ancestry but not been able to find any Irish baptism records. Any ideas please
