I am trying to find where the marriage certificate of Samuel Kay who married Mary Oxley at Bolton on Dearne Yorkshire in 1818 would be kept. As there have been changes in districts over the years I am not sure whether it would come under Rotherham, Doncaster or Barnsley. Can anyone help. Elaine ( flying Doctor).

Kay????

Hi Elaine,,

This wont appear as a GRO Registered marriage,,,they never began till 1837 and then were sketchey to start with,,,
you need the Parish Registeres which may hold it,if it was a church marriage,,,I should image these will be at the nearest Record Office or Archive,or even the Local Family History may hold some,,,,,of the area you need,,,,

it may just appear as a entry of marriage between the two names,,,

Hello Elaine,
I'm afraid you will not get a marraige certificate for this couple as the registration of births, marriages and deaths did not come in until 1837. To find a record of this marriage you will need to consult the marriage register of Bolton on Dearne. I do not know where that is kept, but try the County Record Office for starters. Malcolm.

You've seen the info in the IGI I assume? --

MARY OXLEY
Spouse: SAMUEL KAY
Marriage: 24 NOV 1818 Bolton Upon Dearne, Yorkshire, England

You can get copies of things from the Mormons, but I've never done it. It will be a copy of the parish register, I believe, and that probably is all the info it contains.

That's probably where you did get the info, but if you haven't seen that, go to

www.familysearch.org

and search the International Genealogical Index for Mary Oxley married to Samuel Kay, and look for the instructions about how to get hold of a copy of what they have!

Many thanks, they were married in church and on family search it does not give any other info. I am trying to get his fathers name to put the last link in the chain, it's driving me mad. Elaine.

Heh. You've seen this one?

EDWARD KAY
Christening: 07 MAY 1809 Bolton Upon Dearne, Yorkshire, England
Mother: ANN KAY
Source Information:
Batch No.: C010833

It might be that even if you found his christening, you wouldn't find his father. ;)

Samuel could have been from away, of course.

That's the only Kay christening in batch C010833, you likely know!

And there are these --

1. Fanny Key - George Key + Elizabeth
Gender: Female Christening: 11 DEC 1889 Sheffield, Yorkshire, England

2. Harry Kay - Frederick Kay + Harry
Gender: Male Christening: 10 FEB 1892 Sheffield, Yorkshire, England

3. Willie Kay - Charles Ibbotson Kay + Lily Lavinia
Gender: Male Christening: 22 JAN 1895 Sheffield, Yorkshire, England

4. Frank Adrian Kay - Tom Kay + Florence
Gender: Male Christening: 08 MAR 1893 Sheffield, Yorkshire, England

5. Samuel Kay - William Kay + Mary
Gender: Male Christening: 17 NOV 1895 Sheffield, Yorkshire, England

-- all submitted and not extracted, but looking like maybe they are transcribed from parish records, given the precise dates. I guess you're thinking about trying to contact the submitter.

Hmm. Looking reliable, I thought, until I saw the mother "Harry" I just added above ...

I've been round and round all the Kays. My husbands family are said to have been in and around Wath upon Dearne since Tudor times and possibly before. I have a complete set up to 17/1800 but cannot tie the two ends together. there is a Samuel born wath but it is not the one. The Kays had land in Wath Darfield and Bolton on Dearne and possibly farther afield. there is a Samuel born Wentworth 1794 and one born Greasbro' 1791 all within a stones throw of Wath. Arrrrrgh it's driving me to distraction. Elaine.

Hope this helps. Bolton on Dearne Parish, St Andrews the Apostle, registers are deposited at Sheffield Archives.
Doncaster Archives have transcriptions. Doncaster Family History Society have publications of marriage indexes 1750-1799 and 1800-1837.

Hi Elaine

Parish Church Bolton on Dearne
Burials Samuel Kay 29th March 1864 age 74 Abode Newhill Wath.

As you already know christening Samuel Kay Wentworth 1794 parents John Kay and Margaret Vellary, the age is correct.

Whew! Pauline you may just have saved my sanity. You have tied Bolton on Dearne to Wentworth and to Wath. I now have the missing link and can refine the tree back to the 1500s. I had every Kay; brothers cousins etc now I can do the direct line. The only problem is, when I have done this how will I be able to keep myself occupied. I really owe you thanks. Elaine.
