Thanks Blossom I have just edited it so you know who I am talking about. lol

He was my 2 x gt grandfather but I don't know who his parents were. He appears on the 1841 census but they were married with two children then. Living in Crediton.

You can't get a marriage certificate, they didn't start until 1837. All you can do is to look at the parish record of the marriage, but at this date, those records only gave the name of the bride and groom, their ages, their marital status and the names of the witnesses. It did include the fathers name. The best you could do is from the age, try to find a baptism for John

Unfortunately Chumleigh is only covered on the IGI for baptisms C050461 1610-1726

This page from GENUKI, has a link to the online parish clerk for Chumleigh, who offers look ups for the baptisms for the time you need

scroll down to the section headed Genealogy

Linda Thanks very much for the info. I have looked on IGI without much success. It could be lots of people.

I shall try Genuki and see if I can get anymore info.

Thanks a bunch Linda.

Though they don't have Johns parents names there is someone on Ancestry that has him in their tree.

Tried the link sent by Linda for Genuki Chumleigh and had reply from the person dealing with those files..............wait for it.........he is in OZ!!!!!!!

Sent me the files but I can't open them!!! How annoying.

They are graphic files and have been enhanced and my pc won't open them at all.

Have written back asking for the originals.

Just wanted to let you all know that if you dig hard enough you get results.

Thank you Linda in Heriot Country, Julie Without Urns and Blossom. Great work girls. Thanks.

Try a site called Genogold - it has a lot of parish records online for Devon and Cornwall.

Hi Nerine,

I already have his marriage it was actually 1836, but have not come across the census with his parents in your last posting. Can you please tell me what census it was and the RG ref. I know he was married to Elizabeth Turner and who their children were. Their first child was Thomas born in 1837 then Mary in 1840 so he will not appear on any census with his parents.

I do live in Devon and have been sent Chumleigh baptisms from 1808 to 1813 but not all the pages are there and the one with 1811 baptisms on has only a half a page and the next page is exactly the same as the previous one!!
